quote: They love them some free trade that hurts the US It's actually the other way around. Here's a more recent example. Obama passed a tariff in 2009 on car and truck tires imported from China. The result: 1. $1.1 billion in lost welfare to consumers, coming from higher costs from imported tires, and higher costs to domestic tires. 2. 1,200 jobs saved at the cost of $900,000 per job 3. 3,731 jobs lost due to the diverted spending on higher tire prices.
Remember Cash for Clunkers? That policy crushed poor people's used car supply, basically Obammy broke it off deep in is largest voting block, used car prices soared.

Friend of mine is from upstate. He’s from a tiny bumblefrick town that exists solely because there used to be a lumber mill there. Now there isn’t, and everyone is poor as frick.
Times change. Labor markets change. People are either willing to change with them, by retraining and potentially relocating, or they can live in abject poverty in a location where, if you wiped every person and building off the national map and then had the people disperse, no sane person would live.

No, places like Buffalo have near 40% poverty rates because when free trade happened and people inevitably lost jobs, they failed to innovate, they failed to be flexible, it's not the company's fault that the city went to shite because of trade deals with China.
The sole purpose of a company is to make money.
The only thing you're doing with tariffs is causing the prices on the good you're putting the tariff on to rise.
Want us to compete again? Kill regulations, destroy OSHA, quit taxing the ever loving shite out of companies, and unleash the American workforce. It's incredible to me how people think that it's a one way street when it comes to free trade and it's all mean China's fault. No, it primarily falls on our shoulders because we're not willing to compete in the world economy anymore and that's why China's economy is what it is today.

Yeah pretty much. China will have some advantages over American in various different sectors, mainly labor, but until the USG stops actively harming production in the US, I don't want to hear about "fair trade".

He could abolish OSHA, unions, minimum wage, social security, workers comp, unemployment insurance, medicaid, highway use tax, the EPA, DEQ , etc, to help the US compete with China. And don’t think China doesn’t tax our goods!
fricking this.

I would say the "conservatives" who support Trump have been exposed.
When Bush ended his steel tariff in 2003, he was blasted by the left and the trade unions and it was welcomed by conservatives. My how things have changed.

destroy OSHA,
I fail to see how this would help. The others I am on board with.

Watching this board defend policies that are going to lead to more union hacks continuing to collect corporate welfare is amazing.
