You want as much exposure of a candidate as possible. Voting weeks before an election is risking the fact that no dirty info will be coming out.
Feel bad for some montana voters, but it's a risk you take.

To be fair, this is basically unprecedented- I can't recall any campaign where the candidate himself may have completely destroyed his chance 30 hours before polls close.
