If Tiger Band can revoke a band member’s stipend for being caught drinking on an away trip out of uniform while being over 21, then the university has every right to revoke athletic scholarships from student athletes who, while in uniform at athletic competitions, use their spotlight to engage in political grandstanding which the university does not agree with.
With that said, this whole issue is stupid because the team wasn’t doing that regardless, and the governor jumped to conclusions to throw red meat to his base.

The athletes have a job to do and that is compete. The coaches have a job to get the athletes ready and organized to compete. Let them do their jobs.
If the governor wants a pregame patriotic performance, send out a team of baton twirlers in red, white and blue uniforms. The teams are busy.

You’re making it too difficult, they don’t put that much thought into it. Landry is a big Trump guy, until he takes a position contrary to Trump he is deserving of adulation and respect from the cult. By defending him they are essentially defending Trump.
