By passing an unrelated substitute bill in its place on Tuesday, Georgia’s Republican-led House derailed a proposed bill that would have given the State Election Board (SEB) authority to investigate the secretary of state.

The Georgia Senate passed SB358 in January shortly after it passed out of the Senate Ethics Committee. The bill, as approved by the Senate, would remove the secretary of state from his role as an “ex officio nonvoting member” of the SEB and permit the board to, amongst other things, “investigate the Secretary of State” and “require the Secretary of State to cooperate with certain investigations.”

The bill clarified that the SEB has authority to investigate “the administration of primary and election laws by the Secretary of State and local election officials and frauds and irregularities in primaries and elections.”

But the House Committee on Governmental Affairs ditched the Senate’s bill in favor of a “substitute” bill that has nothing to do with the bill’s original purpose. That substitute appears to focus on campaign finance laws but includes no language authorizing the SEB to investigate the secretary of state as initially proposed.

Never said that either.

Kemp is limited to what he can do under GA law. That is the truth.

Time for you to stop telling lies. I know it is hard. But just try.

BS! Are seriously suggesting he has no leverage on the Gop party in GA? Seriously?

Are you saying he doesn't have a friggin mouth that works!? Are you saying LAW prohibits him from coming out TODAY and BLASTING house committee for gutting this?

Seriously?

Come on now... the Good GOP Gov has no power. It's just a symbolic role!

The Ga Law will not allow him to speak out even. He has no free speech in Ga.

The GOPe would rather Biden have a second term and all the unnecessary pain that comes with that than to see Trump win.

The bigger problem is the people remaining asleep and allowing the state legislatures to do what they are doing.

Nothing to see here... "muh NO FRAUD! NO PROOF!" Right?
If that's the case, the SOS would have no problem with an investigation. It should be welcomed to prove "muh NO FRAUD!"

If we are discussing Georgia politics seriously, I would fear the state elections board being corrupted and acting illicitly more than I fear the secretary of state position.

Why pass a law that would be so easy to regret later?

Political laws and levers do not see red vs blue. Anything that you hope can be a bludgeon in your favor can fall on your head tomorrow.

1. Pass the bill
2. Go after Fani
3. Repeal the bill like NY

Georgia Republicans.

They don’t want it uncovered. They largely are complicit.

Kemp could make the case for anything he needs others to do. He hasn’t done that for one very specific reason.

The board just in February voted NOT to recommend an end to 'No excuse absentee voting' so I think its not necessarily predictable how this board will come down on issues.
