FYI on the use of ventilators and how stupid everyone is being

ventilators are a rarely, very very rarely used medical machine that gets used a very few times a year for anything other then for surgeries and most hospitals go years without using the one and only one they have for anything but surgeries.
why people think we need a personal ventilator at every hospital so every person on earth has one makes as much sense as saying we all need personal space shuttles
so can everyone please start laughing at these idiots and call them out for the morons they are as they scream we need millions of ventilators so everyone has one

May I ask what you are basing this on?

We need at least 325 million ventilators on hand at all times just in case everyone in the US needs one simultaneously and it's 100% Trump's fault we don't have them.

And there’s no smokers in the US either.

Conversation with my wife over the last minute:
Me how often do they use vents in the hospital
Her all the time
Me reads your post
Her he is a moron
But she is just a CT surgeon so what does she know.
ETA she was not suggesting a vent is needed for every person just that multiple vents are used every day in any decent-sized hospital

You could not be more wrong. Anytime a patient is put under into deep anesthesia they use a ventilator. The patient will have said a ventilator until they wake up from the surgery.
IDK what 3rd world cattle hospital you are used to but that is standard procedure in all modern hospital wards that see 100's of thousands of surgeries and procedures that involve patients on ventilators every year.

Literally wtf
Can’t imagine a more incorrect statement

Hahaha.... I don't know how often ventilators are used in reality, and I am in medical. Because I don't know though, I will also not post as if I do.

That watch collection makes a whole lot more sense now.
But on a related note, essentially every surgery requires a ventilator. So any hospital capable of doing surgery uses them on close to a weekly basis.
A search of "ICU to ventilator ratio ncbi" (side note, add "ncbi" to any search to get scientific journal publications instead of tabloid publications) shows that we have roughly 1 (0.96 I think it said) vent per ICU bed.
It also shows that 29% (+/- 14%) of ICU patients are ventilated at any given time. This includes "elective" procedure admissions where any case that could be postponed for lack of ICU bed is considered "elective." 29 seems a bit high, but there's a wide margin of error and this is ~100 hospitals surveyed.

Except, we can't use BiPap to support a patient with respiratory failure if there's a chance it's Covid 19. I haven't had to intubate a CHF patient in a few years, but my partner just tubed a patient b/c there's a chance it could be a viral pneumonia. SO...we using more vents than we used to.

You are frickin' ignorant as shite about what you are trying to talk about. First, you are a slimy little cock smoker because you tried to come back in an edit you post when it was clear you were way off. The problem is you are still wrong. Go to any regional medical center and you will find multiple vents being used in almost every one of their different critical care units at any given time. They aren't some machine in the basement they have to dust off for use. You were just talking out of your arse.
She certainly wasn't suggesting we need a vent for every human in the US, that's stupid and nobody said that. I didn't attack your hyperbole because it was just that.
Bottom line you didn't know what you were talking about.

You think most hospitals only have 1 ventilator?

Or maybe he's thinking ECMO.
I run critical care research studies for a living, for the last 20 yrs or so. US ICUs have 1 vent per bed. Second tier ICU care countries may have slightly less but still no less than a ventilator for every 2 beds. Less in lower standard of care countries. But ICU and ventilator go hand in hand, not to mention the vents used in surgery as described above.

Well, I spoke with an HVAC worker and he assures me that almost every hospital in the United States has some ventilation and most have adequate ventilation.
So, relax
So, relax
