I'm quite sure he's not foolish and knows what he is doing.

Lets say he sells eggs, and he charges by the egg. 1 person may order 100 eggs and another person may order 1500 eggs, both need to be delivered.

If he increases the price per egg, then either then 100 egg doesn't pay enough, or if you price it on him, the 1500 egg gut pays way more because by default he's paying 15 times more of the increase.

And you still need competitive pricing against other egg sellers.

So a surcharge makes it even for both. In the past it was just a cost of business. Now it's becoming a big enough cost it needs to be offset.

It'll be interesting to see if he does it, and even more interesting if he does it and to see if they go away if prices come down.
