quote:yes it is. it's exactly the same thing and your inability to see that is why you say stupid stuff like "take my money and use it to enable people to be a drain on society when the govt is trillions of dollars in debt"
Me giving $50 to some dude on the internet is not the same as the government using the money they get from taxes to subsidize internet.
hopefully one day you'll wake up and see it's exactly the same thing. you have no idea that corrupt bureaucrats will actually use 100% of the money for that purpose which makes it no different than just giving some money to random internet person

The cost is WAY overstated. If you bundle the internet with your Obamaphone service, you’ll get a great discount. And they can create a new government agency to periodically call customer service reps for the internet providers and threaten to discontinue service unless they get the same offers as new struggling customers get.
On a more serious note, people say that internet access is critical to student success. Does that mean that the discount won’t be offered to households without children? Will the discount be revoked if students graduate and leave home to attend college?
I would argue that having a set of encyclopedias gave me a huge advantage as a student in the 1970’s but there was no taxpayer funded program to make sure everyone had access to encyclopedias unless you count public libraries where - wait for it - THEY OFFER FREE INTERNET ACCESS NOW! Follow the money; these companies aren’t interested in providing discount internet out of the goodness of their hearts.

quote:to who? not to tax payers when the govt is trillions of dollars in debt. and you have NO IDEA whatsoever who this money is going to and if they're actually going to use it for any "worthwhile" purpose, i.e. the whole point of the program. as far as you know, the recipients are going to surf porn all day. is that "useful?" are you going to insist that they be monitored 24/7? no, you're just going to throw money away.
I just don't have an issue with this program, as I think it's useful
how are you going to determine whether it turns out to be "useful" or not? what criteria would establish that?

When unemployment gets extended again with this new bill, there will be people paid for unemployment for 1.5 years.
As a contractor, I could make around $27k this year if I didn't work..just on unemployment.

Can't get them on the Big-Tech-Democrat-social-media propaganda train if they can't get on line.

quote:Ok. Why don't you pay some people's bill for them?
Making it more affordable for struggling folks doesn't seem that bad to me.

Seems to me like the internet companies will still be charging the same rates, folks will just get some help paying the bill.

This is a good idea, allows kids to attend virtual school and provides people without jobs easier access to apply for jobs from home.

Goddamn you're stupid. How do you think internet gets to your house? Magic? It costs money genius. I assure you the internet providers are NOT the ones bending you over. Educate yourself.

Ha ha what a friggin JOKE this is! I live on tribal land (Colville Rez) and 3/4 of this reservation doesn't even have broadband ran to it.
Its WAY to spread out and isolated so the telecommunication outfits won't invest out here. So that said what good is this subsidy and computer money if you can't even hook up to the internet?
Currently I'm waiting on Starlink and that is about the only option out here besides HughsNet and that is a complete rip-off with bandwidth limits.

That's too much ATT has a internet plan for qualifing low income families for only $10 month. High Speed , most people have to pay $80 a month for the same .
