Superintendent Scott Brabrand recommended six possible replacement names: John Lewis, Barack Obama, Mildred Loving, Cesar Chavez, Legacy and Central Springfield.

John Lewis: no connection whatsoever to Virginia, quote 'It's going to be very difficult. I don't see the president-elect [Donald Trump] as a legitimate president.'

Barack Obama: no connection whatsoever to Virginia, quote 'I cannot swallow whole the view of Lincoln as the Great Emancipator.'

Mildred Loving: She married a white man and defeated VA's prohibition on interracial marriages.

Cesar Chavez: no connection whatsoever to Virginia, quote ' Preservation of one's own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures.' Hmmm, really?!?!

Robert E. Lee: native son of VA, quote 'So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that Slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have cheerfully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained.'

I'll let their words/deeds speak for the idiocy of this move.

Che Guevera High School has a nice ring to it.

Che Guevera - Has no ties to Virginia but he fits the current direction and reasoning behind this Marxist takeover

and if you don't like it you're a racist white supremacist colonizer that hates POC that have been victims of systematic oppression.

Here in San Antonio they renamed lee high school to L.E.E high school. Or legacy of educational excellence hs. I think that just made everyone mad.

My stock suggestion for any renaming is Dan White HS, with the Fighting Twinkies as mascot.

While renaming is fricking stupid,

quote:

Mildred Loving

Or

quote:

Central Springfield

Are the only acceptable ones

I would love to see some stats on that school, including test scores, etc.

Once you’re the president, you have a connection to every state. There are George Washington and Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt high schools all across this country, even in states that weren’t part of the country when they were president.

It is not a bad school, kids of a lot of government and military, heavy amount of Asians (East Asian, Indian), and about a third Hispanic. Pretty standard for Fairfax Virginia.

ETA: Oh I see you were referring to the school in San Antonio

Cherry picking Lee quotes or stories will not lead you to concluding he’s the most noble role model.

Not many people will want to name a school after the guy who personally instructed salt water to be poured over the fresh whip lash wounds of slaves.

My mom taught at Lee for 25 years. The demographics in the area changed significantly in that time. She taught a lot of Vietnamese and African refugees who embodied the American dream; parents worked incredibly hard to ensure their children went to college and obtained gainful employment I.e. doctors, chemists.
The writing on the wall was when they changed JEB Stuart high school’s name a few years ago.
If they are going to change the name I would recommend that they choose a landmark instead of a person. 495 interchange High School, Accotink, Franconia or North Springfield.

I also live in the area, been thinking Franconia made the most sense because of its location.

As others said, not a bad school. Very diverse but lots of upwardly mobile strivers.

It should be a decent school. Fairfax, along with other NOVA counties, is consistently one of the highest income counties in the country. Fairfax High School is a great school.

I may be wroing, but I don't think Fairfax HS is part of the Fairfax County school system. It's in Fairfax city, a different jurisdiction.
