this looks very encouraging - conservatives look like they are going to be the largest section of government
Not quite. The AfD party is the conservative party. They will get more votes in their law making body. But to get to be the head of the country they will need to more than double their vote percent to over 50%. Why? Because none of the other parties will partner with them to get over the required 50%.
So as I feared it is probably to late for Germany to save itself.

US should publicly vow support for the German conservative opposition and publicly fund them.
No, we shouldn’t fund them.

Germany is at least better than the UK, who went backwards in their last election, handing the country over to the leftists.

Yep, France and the UK are lost.

Unfortunately not much. The illiberal “pro democracy” fans have already conspired to block them from participating in the government, even though they are the 2nd largest political party. Political parties a fraction of their size will hold more power
The US should label them an authoritarian country, with applicable sanctions, if they refuse to let the will of the people have a say.

You think a party that wins 5% of the vote should get a seat at the table over a party that wins 20% of the vote?
The only "democracy" these people like is when their party wins elections out right.

Don't even bother responding to that clown. He's obsessed with the smell of his own farts. He is the reason this board badly needs an ignore feature.

Parliamentary governments are kind of ridiculous. There are so many parties getting an absolute majority is about impossible.

AfD is going to do well and be left out the government, and the echo chamber will have to be educated on Parliamentary governments like usual

There is no perfect system in a democracy
SMD election systems limit voters to 2 choices, typically. That's also an insane system from that perspective.

You realise that if they form a government with 50%+ of the votes they are doing that. Why would AFDs 20% be more important than a combined 50%?
If anything Trump winning in 08 without the popular vote is refusing the will of the people.
But, there is never a perfect solution, if the UK had the same system there would be a Tory/Reform coalition and Labour wouldn't sniff Downing Street. In the other hand coalitions are often fractious e.g Italy historically had elections regularly because they don't last

So did AFD win or not
No one got a majority so it's hard to call out a winner.
AfD had its best ever showing at 20%.

I'm not sure how German politics works, will there be a runoff? From what I understand this was was Germany's last chance to avoid being overrun by Muslim hordes

If the fatherland falls, Europe follows.

I'm no expert me.
But from what I understand the top vote getter, Christian democratic union, is going to Try and form a coalition with everyone but the AFD.

The CDU et al has essentially outlawed the AFD and sent the message that if Germans vote for the AFD, you will not be represented.
