It is a sales tax like most states charge in the US.

Even Louisiana is not near a 20% sales tax.

Indeed. The EU is a bigger trading group than the US. It's not quite as cut and dry.

I know you're really hoping to see the EU stick it to your evil stepdaddy OMB but... not gonna' happen. We have the leverage. They will fold. Eventually. But keep cheering for the other guys who are mad they can't fleece Americans anymore. You do you.

they already had high tariffs on imports

How high were they previously? Don't give me a number you can't explain from the Whitehouse made up board ..

"Whitehouse made up board..." You revealed how much of a leftist brainwashed OMB TDS retard you are with that statement... "Show me something that backs up what I WANT to believe... not the factual confirmed tariff rates."

Nerd.

And the EU would have an even lower GDP if they had to truly provide for their own defense.

One has nothing to do with the other. What would change is the percentage of GDP paid for defense would increase.

Those were clearly labeled as more than tarrifs in the calculations. If you've got the math formula to explain them then use them but otherwise I'm curious why no one even knows what previous tarrifs rates were if it was so unfair...

My understanding is the VAT in this situation is a VAT on the item just to cross the border into an EU country, this os in addition to any tariffs. An at the counter VAT is added at retail sales in some cases.

Just to clear this up you are correct but missing a step at the end.

If an importer buys widgets from the US they pay a 19% (in most cases) VAT when the items are onshored in Germany in addition to any import duties and tariffs. If the importer then sells the item to a customer they charge the customer the same 19 or 7% VAT on the item. At that point VAT has been charged twice on the item. However, the importer/seller then files for an import VAT refund/credit so in the end there is only one VAT paid. The VAT is only ultimately owed for the final purchase in the chain, whether it goes through one or multiple levels; all VAT incurred prior to that final purchase is refundable.

Obviously, if the importer uses the widget in their business they do not get the VAT refunded and deduct it as regular depreciation or amortization similar to the US.

If they are a bigger trading group, why are we protecting them?
