Who did he tell? According to your own article, he didn't specifically tell Carson. He told Carson COS.

The newly released emails contradict the expansive denials by a HUD spokesman when CNN first reported this story. The spokesman repeatedly told CNN at the time the Carsons were not involved in the purchase of the pricey dining set.
"New tables, chairs, in that room whatsoever -- zero awareness of this purchase being made," the spokesman said. "Neither one of them knew this purchase was being made. The secretary knew that the table and chairs were old because somebody fell out of a chair once. That's literally it. So they had nothing to do with the purchase, nothing to do with anything around that."

The spokesman just lied for no reason here.

Quit being dense. We knew about the table. Ben Carson's public statement was he had no knowledge of the order being placed and that it was being cancelled. The news here is there are emails showing that he and his wife actually picked

I realize the CNN headline is arse.......but there really is nothing in the story supporting your assertion above.

That said, probably the most informative paragraph in this whole article from someone who has actual experience with this problem is the following.
quote:

The emails do not include a response from Candy Carson, but in his statement to CNN earlier this month, Secretary Carson also acknowledged there was a deadline to make a decision on the furniture purchase. Carson said he and his wife "were told there was a $25,000 budget that had to be used by a certain time or it would be lost."

You guys want to know why this story isn't bothering me for the reasons you all have your panties in a wad? Well. Simple.

In about 1998, while in the Army, I once ordered AND RECEIVED over $14K worth of furniture to furnish a unit level Admin office that was a total of about 400 square feet.

Why you might ask? Well. Because I literally would have gotten in trouble had I NOT spent $14K.

Yes. Government budgeting is THAT retarded.

No the spokesman didn't.

It is totally possible for this to be a true statement given the fact that he cancelled the order. It is possible for them to have picked out a new set and have no knowledge of it being purchased. The statement you just quoted does not say what you or the author of the article are saying.

This is the problem with appointing people who are not specifically interested in tearing down these agencies to their roots. They don't take interest in the everyday shite that matters, like reducing waste to bare minimum while simultaneously dismantling their own agency. Carson probably thinks it's important that he fulfills the agencies mission statement, when in reality, it's the opposite.

Speak fully. They told them they had the funds to cover it and basically told them the funds must be spent.

For those of us with experience with such budgetary frickery...........this isn't even surprising. It's why people like me are anti-big government. Government isn't designed to be good stewards of money. In fact, it's literally designed NOT to be.

Good point, it doesn't show it went directly to Carson, but his COS and exec assistant. With that said it proves that HUD lied when they said that only career staff was involved. Carson's CoS is political not career. Again, why lie about this?

The career administration staffer sent the quote to Carson's office, specifically Carson's chief of staff and his executive assistant, casting further doubt on the agency's assertion that the purchase was made entirely by career staff.

Ok? Maybe he lied. Maybe Carson lied. Maybe Carson forgot that he pointed at a picture of a table once. Who fricking knows? Carson is responsible in any case.

Agree. I know all about use or it or lose it with Gov spending...

That being said, what was the point of all of the Drain the Swamp and run things like a business if they just keep doing the same thing?

I'd also like to point out..........and I know this is going to make people lose their fricking minds.........but $31K to replace furniture that hasn't been replaced since 1998 isn't exactly a crazy number.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the set isn't like some 6 piece set.

My dining set in my formal dining room was about $8K for reference. But I have no fricking intention of keeping that bitch for 30 years.

100% agree, he's CEO of HUD and is ultimately responsible for the people and culture of the place.

Agree, like I keep saying, if they would have tried using your defense of the spending then that's fine.

But, for them to just keep lying and blaming others is what I have the biggest problem with.

What Ben should have done was keep the existing 1820 antique red-oak 20-topper in the HUD dining room and go to Rooms-to-Go and buy (2) 10-seat tables with faux white-oak tops and enough table-clothes to cover the existing table and the two new tables, so way everything matches.

Also, all new embassies should be furnished from IKEA catalogs, since Service Merchandise has gone out of business.

I agree with that 100 percent. However, for Carson's department, I think 4 or 5 plastic folders and paper cups will suffice. Splurge on Dixie and Chinette though.
