My mother is from there, half my family is from there although the last remaining holdouts moved from there to Marfa once the family ranch sold last year.
I've spent many many many days there and know it fairly well. Plenty of good people still there but El Paso is basically part of what we call the Borderplex with Juarez .... so yeah, there's a problem. Most people have no conception of the size, the mass, nor the mess that is the result of decades of open borders there between Chihuahua and Texas and New Mexico.

Yeah I visited El Paso 4 times last year and spent about 6 week's total.
I determined it is in fact an infested shite hole.
Las Cruces, couple new suburbs out east of the airport, maybe a few other pockets is the only places half arse livable.

Yeah but being in El Paso is nothing like being in Juarez. El Paso is safe except for very few areas. I've never felt safe in Juarez because of the lawlessness.
They've done a good job of securing that border between the 2 cities since the late 90s. El Paso doesn't have a violent crime problem. Much less on the level of Juarez.

It's safer than all the biggest cities in Louisiana with much better schools. And it's really not close.

The Calliope projects are so charming! There is nothing like that in El Paso. That is a fact.
Now as far as more opportunity and things to do, NOLA obviously beats EP all day long. El Paso is boring. It's in the middle of nowhere and the job market is terrible. But it's not unsafe.
