EBR mental health tax

Facts 1.5 mills for ten years
Anticipate bringing in 6.1 million per year to build and operate a new mental health facility.
Proponents claim the facilities are needed, a better solution to mental health issues in the parish. I do not disagree.
But they also claim the new plan will save the CP 59 million in ten years.
The obvious question is why raise taxes 61 million in ten years to save 59 million dollars? Why can't we use that 59 million dollars, raise taxes 2 million dollars and then do the plan?

Yeah, I'm sure EBR will use this money wisely.
I'm interested to see what the effective tax rate is for someone living in BR city limits with 200k joint income and 500k property value

I’ll NEVER vote for a new tax in EBR. They have proven over and over that they are not fiscally responsible.

I’d rather give a crackhead money than EBR parish.
At least you know you will get a semi honest answer from the crackhead about where the money went.

Unfortunately, there is a growing demographic that thinks increasing taxes only means taxing rich people so they vote for every tax. That group is going to be the majority soon

What are the causes of mental illness? Are people simply predisposed to mental illness at birth?

Why aren’t they using the hospital side of the old Women’s Hospital complex as the Mental Health facility?
The city already owns it when they bought the complex for the new Police Offices. It wouldn’t cost much at all to make the transition. It is already laid out perfectly for such a facility

do you want an honest answer or a PC answer?
honest: the unintelligent, lazy, and needy members of society breed at a much faster rate than the intelligent, hard-working, tax paying members of society. in Baton Rouge, in Louisiana, in the USA, and everywhere on this planet.
unfortunately there is no humane and accepted solution to this problem.

The town I live in is doing the same thing. While I can see the public benefit in having decent mental healthcare available, my problem with these special taxes is that they never go away and a lot of time they just use them to shift money to other wasteful things. I don't think I've ever seen a sunset on a special tax happen. They always get extended. It's like every single municipality goes off the exact same playbook.

My lack of trust in our local government to do the right thing with the money is the main reason I never vote for new taxes.

After Medicaid expansion, there are no longer “indigent” pt population. I can tell you with some certainty that between the numerous independently owned mental health facilities and capital area human services that there is no need for further beds etc.
There is however a need for more competent practitioners.
I hope EBR doesn’t fall for this scam.

EBR police hdqtrs. is old Womans Hospital, they only occupy a small part, the Clerk uses a little but several floors vacant. Use the rest of the building effectively. Problem solved millions saved.
However they wont consider this NOTHING except a new building will suffice.

Thanks for taking up my lead. Seems that nobody wants to promote the better/cheaper cure of fostering an environment self-discipline, respect, and personal accountability. A well-placed size 12 cowboy boot to the rear end during the formative years needs to be considered.

Yep. They always need new toys. EBRP probably wastes 70% of the taxes they bring in.

Voted "NO" today with early voting. There are already mental health facilities in the area that the city could contract with. We don't need another whole bureaucracy to provide these services.

I am torn on what to do with this one . . .
After EKL was closed, there was nowhere to hospitalize mentally ill people, and it’s my understanding from speaking to friends in law enforcement, medical health care, counseling/psychiatry, and even patients or family members of them - that the city does not have sufficient resources. People with schizophrenia, for example don’t have schizophrenia bc of poor lifestyle choices. Neither bipolar disorder that induces mania and even hallucinations. There’s no way to deal with these people, who are ill, especially after adulthood. They end up homeless, in jail, or in emergency rooms. I’m not sure what retirement age parent would do with an adult heroin addict or a 45 year old child who thinks that the TV is sending him messages from out of space. Where to go? And how to pay for it.
This is a public policy problem. Not just in EBR but everywhere. I’d rather see my tax dollars there than in the hopeless school
system in EBR - which is incidentally also overburdened with mental illness problems that the schools aren’t equipped to deal with in parent and student populations.
If I could assure myself that whatever is done is done right - I do think the benefits of a mental health hospital system could be exponentially better than what we have now, which is care by emergency room and incarceration.

Bad idea.
We as taxpayers should remember that we already pay taxes to the state to handle mental health.
We should force the state to come up with more long term state beds.

Hey, I care about it too.
But EBR will get $0.03 on the dollar for their taxes paid.
