His concerns weren't about the federal government.
Hacking is a concern, but the larger concern is how the programming will likely be written more favorably for some over others at the point of collision decision.

That's a legitimate concern.

then the vehicle would have to know who was in the vehicle....and the program in the vehicle altered remotely.

The program will very quickly move to a cloud based network especially in urban areas in his opinion.

I'd be interested to see how driverless cars behave when they get traffic lights and turn signals and have to consider all the other circumstances. Hell, how do they even perceive the turn signals and the circumstances at all? That's some amazing software.
I would assume it would begin on open highways well before it moves into the cities....Kinda like the cruise control...you get onto a highway and then the system takes over....when you are in manual driving mode, the system could still tell you/warn you of wrong doing....it will be interesting to see this move forward...but you are talking many many years in the future.

This would keep me from wanting a driverless car.

if these cars malfunction and kill one person, the lawsuit will be astronomical.
Not really. It will be product liability. Those suits already happen all the time with vehicles.

I see rightwingers as the most vocal opponents of this technology, although they do seem to naively accept black box voting technology without much complaint.

Cops would fight this whether they were in a union or not. I'm sure Louisiana sheriffs are against driverless cars.
They are a big industry and local political machines.

"if these cars malfunction and kill one person, the lawsuit will be astronomical."
In that one instance, sure, but so long as no punitive damages are involved, the liability should be the same as with any fatality. Overall, aggregate costs would go down if the cars are, in fact, safer.

Can't wait for driverless cars and those hovercraft things to be commercially viable.

40,000 people die in cars with drivers every year. If 10,000 die in driverless cars, you've saved a lot of lives.
People like to think they're in control, though.

I could see situations in which vehicle malfunction caused an avoidable crash, but in general when automated cars are here, I think you see both accidents AND traffic congestion go down. Computers would maintain proper speed, pacing, and if a collision occurs it will know about it immediately and way down the road. Really, with proper spacing between vehicles maintained, even mechanical failures causing issues would be drastically minimized.
If there were driverless cars I could get my forum posting done on the way to work etc. You'd probably have an increase in people whacking off in their car on the way to work because all the sudden the wifes not around, the laptop is open, badabing badaboom hand in pants. Or maybe thats just me.

I look forward to the day that every car in line at a light moves at the same time when the light goes green.
That will be a joyous day.

Traffic fines exist to promote public safety. By definition, a self driving car that will always follow all traffic laws should be something that cops want as a direct benefit to public safety.
Cops don't want this. Cops are nothing more than revenue collectors with a badge and gun. It's not about public safety. It's about money and power and control.
Do you really believe that? Most cops spend the majority of a shift answering calls for service from the public. The most common calls are home and business alarms, domestic disturbances, shoplifting, and suspicious people wandering around residential areas. Sure there are traffic divisions but most "beat" officers don't condut traffic stops unless the person is driving in a dangerous manner. You can argue about this all day and insult me as much as you wish but what I posted above is an accurate description of a large department.
