I'll tell you this: as someone that commutes a lot, I'd pay whatever I could to have this tech. Get the read the news and eat breakfast on my way to work in the morning? Finish up last minute things while on my way home, or just relax and watch a movie? Sign me up.

As a pharma rep, holy shite, the amount of things I could get done with this would be incredible.

Let's just hope Microsoft doesn't get in the game, then all bets are off...

If this becomes a reality, I have no doubt that Google will do "crash test" research, placing human drivers and its cars in the same situations, to show that the car is capable of responding much more effectively to random events than a driver.

Honestly, I'd bet they'll first do it with normal drivers, and then do the Google car vs professional drivers, and show that it is still better than a pro.

Suppose the computer is faced with the choice of hitting an obstruction in the road or running off the road off into a forested area. If the obstruction is a small child vs. a small monkey - will the computer be able to make the value judgement that it is worth running off the road if its a child but not if its a monkey? Suppose the car is occupied by the driver and his 3 young children. Will the computer be able to decide its worth it to take the life of the child in the road to save the lives of the children in the car? How does that get programmed into the machine?

You're an idiot.

Actually, not to offend, but you're rather idiotic to think those kinds of questions won't be posed by the lawmakers who ultimately will decide to allow these on the roads.

Yes. Seat belts and doors will lock you inside while your car unexpectedly takes a detour to the closest citizen questioning/inquisition/de-briefing center.

Well, the lawmakers aren't particularly bright either.

If I give a person a job ... and then that person eventually fails to show up, or quits, etc ... there is no way in HELL that person should receive unemployment benefits.

It is easy to protect your company from this. When someone just quits, doesn't show up, or what ever you have theiramager/supervisor write it up. If they return, you have them sign it. If they don't show back up, you ask them to sign it when they pick up their check. If they want you to mail the check, you include a copy in there for them to return. If you document it like this, you will never have to worry about this. In the 3 yrs I have done this(even if they never sign it), my company has never lost an unemployment claim to them. This company is construction, so there is a high turnover.

The questions might be asked, but how can they effectively argue that point given the current paradigm of panicked reaction and value judgements based solely on self-preservation. I would assume most all algorithmic churning would be put towards taking the path of least physical impact period. Any processing put toward making value judgements based on occupancy/age etc takes away from that. I would assume, as I stated earlier, that prime focus will be but on vehicle spacing which greatly reduces the chance of collision. 12 car lengths distance is perfectly fine when everyone is smoothly traveling at 80 mph because everything is automated.

You are correct that the question will be asked though I think.
