Trump obviously wasn't paying attention in journalism school. What shocks me is that, one of several levels of editors above him didn't catch the error. At the New York Times , CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC, Wapo they always catch that kind of sloppiness, right? Right?

The difference? Trump wasn't a reporter, but he was a private citizen making a claim. He didn't write it in the NYT and he didn't claim to be a journalist.
