Thanks, True. I just wanted to clarify that these were NOT criminal charges.

I'm sure the judge in SDNY that gets this case will essentially ignore it or quickly rule against the DOJ and dismiss it. It'll work it's way to the supreme court in a year or two. Meanwhile, New York will continue to be New York.

New York is a big state. Any federal court in New York will have jurisdiction. I hope DOJ doesn't/hasn't file in SDNY. Surely there is some Republican-appointed federal judge in some 1 judge division.

n Wednesday, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the Department of Justice has filed charges against New York Governor Kathy Hochul and state Attorney General Leticia James, both Democrats, for allegedly failing to enforce federal immigration laws.
Do states typically enforce federal law?

Something Bondi did yesterday;
Attorney General
@PamBondi
went into the DOJ in DC today and noticed that on the walls in one wing they still have big framed photos of Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Merrick Garland.
This is “ridiculous” three weeks into Donald Trump’s presidency.
So she took down the photos off the wall, there and then, on her own, and stacked them in a corner where we hope they will never be seen again.
Bravo!

new to this party - but I am not thrilled that our new AG making a big deal out of some lawsuit.
This is the kind of thing - if announced at all - would just be a note in some journal that keeps track of minutia.
I want the AG focusing her time and energy on criminal behavior within the deep state. And rip their hearts out when she finds it.
I see it as a puff piece. Look, I'm doing something. We are fighting the fight. Be of good cheer.
Personally I'd rather see her working on reviewing all those ATF cases that Trump said to get rid of.
Or, as you said, bringing actual cases to the DoJ for prosecution.

ALBANY — The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit Wednesday that seeks to challenge New York’s Green Light Law, which has allowed thousands of nonresident immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses while blocking federal immigration and border enforcement agencies from accessing the state’s motor vehicle database.
The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Albany as President Donald J. Trump’s administration is seeking to undo many of the immigration policies of former President Joe Biden, whose administration saw record numbers of illegal border crossings that sparked an immigration crisis.
The civil complaint seeks a temporary restraining order against various New York officials. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, during a news conference in Washington, D.C., said the lawsuit targets Gov. Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James and state Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder as defendants.
“What they’ve done is they have a 'tip-off' provision that requires New York’s DMV commissioner to promptly inform any illegal alien when a federal immigration agency has requested their information,” Bondi said, explaining the crux of the litigation. “So think about the men and women in law enforcement. … It’s tipping off an illegal alien, and it’s unconstitutional, and that’s why we filed this lawsuit.”
The 2019 Driver’s License Access and Privacy Act, known as the “Green Light Law,” prohibits New York sheriff’s departments and other agencies from sharing motor vehicle data with federal authorities for immigration enforcement purposes. It also has allowed tens of thousands of immigrants — including many in the U.S. illegally — to obtain driver’s licenses.
Bondi said another fallout of the law is that federal agents, including Border Patrol agents, are not able to access motor vehicle databases when they pull someone over in New York.

As in any post people have different takeaways on a subject but clearly nothing was said about criminal activity ( yet ) and what is being discussed is civil. Now if they find collusion or similar activity such as money changing hands or offered then that different, which I’m sure they are salivating over already

They can't violate or interfer with federal law. From what I heard at the press conference, it sounds like the allegations are:
1) some New York DMV practice which violates federal law
and
2) interfering with federal enforcement of immigration laws...from the DOJ case against Chicago, "that the sanctuary policies put in place by these jurisdictions obstruct the federal government from enforcing immigration laws and impede communication between federal, state, and local law enforcement officials."

Thanks Decatur. Very helpful.
Hate to say it, but the article left out THE most important detail: is the judge a Republican or Democratic appointee.

Rats. All three judges of Albany Division of Northern District of New York are Democratic appointees.
Why not file in Buffalo? 3 of 4 are Republican. We have to start bringing guns to gun fights.

Do they have to file in Albany due to suing the state? Honest question I don't know how they determine venue in civil DOJ actions (if the statutes have specific venue rules or wide ones).

Good question to which I couldn't readily find an answer.
Of course, I am sure DOJ is smart enough to pick the best available court. I suspect you're right and there must be something that requires suit in Albany.
