Hillary was the least popular Democratic candidate in years and she had more popular votes than Trump. Most people, even if they held their nose to vote for her, don't like her. Biden is much more likeable, even though I wouldn't have considered voting for him.
I don't have a dog in this fight since I'm a Libertarian who voted for Johnson. Would have voted for Rand had he become the nominee. Biden would have won, had he ran and secured the nomination, though.

Considering the margin of victory in the key states was razor thin, the only a fair argument is that a more likable, less tainted, better candidate might have defeated Trump.
We'll never know since Joe was told to go home and the primary fixed for Hillary.
