i love pop punk. i know going in it's going to have lots of power cords and harmonies. it's what i came for. is it complex? some of it, some isn't. i really dig these kids from atlanta, just released their first album - the paradox. they've got the nickname black 182
song ms lauren is about wanting to bang his hot teacher. david lee roth approved

The Paradox are hilarious. Seeing them blow up so fast has been a little sus, but their music is really good, so I can’t blame them.
I’m a big pop punk guy, myself. One of the bands I write for is pop punk. I like the genre because it’s so much more liberating to write for. In most rock n roll, the audience mostly expects songs about being cool, heartbreak, doing drugs, having sex, being angry, or dragons if you’re playing metal.
In pop punk, because it’s simultaneously introspective and unserious, silly and sincere, it was easier for me to open up about really painful topics. Since the genre is sorta a big joke that the bands and audiences are all in on, it’s actually a lot easier to tell difficult truths while masking it in a little humor. It helped me talk about self harm, issues with survivors guilt, unrequited love, and cycles of addiction in ways that simply didn’t make sense in a rock n roll band where our songs were like “oooh, I’m a cool car-sex f$&king werewolf! Yeaow!!!” followed by a 5 minute guitar solo. Don’t get me wrong, that band has some seriously fun music, but you get what I mean.
Granted, I don’t make openly political music very often like Green Day does, and my songs often have way more than 3 or 4 chords. And when I write the bass parts, best believe they’re hard AF

Green Day's appeal was short lived in real life. Their music is extremely one dimensional. Although catchy and fun in 1994, it doesn't hold up well to a sophisticated palette. Their politics also leaves a lot to be desired for such a limited musical pedigree. But credit to them for trying to stay relevant.

This is simply not true. Now, you just may not like them as people. But to say they didn't have one good song is simply not true.
Sorry. It wasn’t that good. Many people liked it because radio and tv played it too much and the had no choice.
Only a few bands could warrant that much play. But they had a fake British accent clown get equal air time as the Wallflowers and Spin Doctors….while we deserved more:
Alice In Chains
Sound Garden
And Days of the New.

Green Day made their bones on the boom of skateboarding video's in the early 90's. I can remember many skateboarding video tapes that had Green Day on there as they were breaking out.

A LOT of music nerds were so butt hurt over Nirvana killing hair metal in 1991 that they basically stopped listening to any non-metal music that came out afterwards. As a result, they missed out on a LOT of music, some of which they might actually really like or at least appreciate if they listened to it. Instead, they just assume it’s all amateurish trash because a handful of bands made a point out of not playing guitar solos
Almost everything post-1991 is much more rhythm heavy than the rock that came before.
Still, bands like Tool prove that you can write unserious songs and still not play sugar music just to be a corporate success.
Rise Against shows that a band can and do play modern punk and, unlike Green Day, be good.
Green Day is what they always were. A band made for nothing more than mass consumption with little to no substance. Sure, the masses like them. The masses also liked Cardi B so that doesn't say much.

I like a lot of Green Day’s music. American Idiot was a solid rock opera for its day, and most of its criticisms on the Bush Administration’s War on Terror and the culture of suspicion, surveillance, and mass paranoia plastered over by jingoistic displays of faux patriotism were extremely spot on. Billy Joe had no ability to be objective and continue those apt criticisms against Obama or Biden, but with Bay Area leftists, expect Leftism. Green Day, despite being pretty simple and formulaic, were actually really innovative in the early/mid 90’s. They really did start off as a diy band playing basement shows with hardcore bands, but they were just catchy enough at the right time to blow up. Uno, Dos, Tres are awful, but most of their albums are solid.
Well said.
Also why are we talking about a 21 year old punk rock song

Bingo
They were never very talented. However I do like the fake British accents. Lol

I guess I didn't really mean to project to those outside of myself, My apologies. I meant as I became older, my palette changed and I don't like that particular sound anymore. Honestly, it was a mistake saying it that way on my part.

Those bands making 3-4 chord pop songs about love are so unsophisticated! Excuse me while I jizz to this band playing generic 12 bar blues. They’re REAL creative musicians!
