I’m guessing English as a first language isn’t a requirement if you’re involved in the hiring process

Why don't companies train people any more? The same people who complain that schools don't teach kids real world skills own places that also don't want to take the time to teach real world skills.

You clearly don’t work in tech…it’s a blood bath.

We just hired a girl in marketing who was unemployed for months as well.

My daughter lost her job last year, and hasn't found anything.

She has a master's in Data Analytics.

She doesn't have much experience.

She had a remote job. She lives near us in Bentonville. She loves living here and doesn't want to move.

She's shy and nerdy, and very discouraged. She's not great at interviewing and doesn't have much experience.

Good salesmen are almost impossible to find period. The ones who can really sell end up starting their own business (at an early age too). Why work for someone else when you can actually sell?

We have an over abundance of “highly educated” individuals that are as dumb as rock. They do not want to start off low and work their way up. The worst thing is that they think sporting a worthless degree in under water basket weaving guarantees them an easy office job. Furthermore, you have the blue collar workers with no skills other than their muscle that do not want to use their muscles. That is where we are at.

Where we are at in the workforce is everyone playing “cover my arse”. How does anything get done if everyone is afraid to try?

I know this is beside the point, but a few months ago I went to Lowe's and had a hard time finding help (to get pinestraw). Long story short, I spoke with 3 employees, two of which I obviously disturbed them from their phones. Waited a total of 30 minutes. Finally called the store from my truck and spoke with the manager. He told me they were out of pinestraw. I was certain at least 2 of the previous employees knew this and were just seeing how long the old white guy would wait.

Sent a concise email to the regional manager telling him I'd much rather deal with a 60 year old, slow moving employee that was cordial and wasn't on his phone than deal with what I had to deal with. Told him I knew it was hard to find employees in Monroe that had an IQ greater than a can of soup, but they had to do better.

So, I understand it is very hard to find good employees! I've had employers tell me they had to choose between soup can IQs or drug users. Its rough out there. Thats why I'm frustrated about my friend not being able to find a job.

I have a friend whose sister is 62. She spent 30 years as an underwriter for Unum.

She was laid off in a 'downsizing'. She has an exemplary work record.

Over 100 resumes submitted. No job.

AGE 62...there is your reason

That's my daughter. She has a speech and hearing disability, but graduated magna cum laud and literally top of her class in statistics. Covid hit after that, and she got her masters.

Now, she's just frustrated.

IT can be a pretty bad field. I feel for the guy.

If she can sell, she can get a job. I could hire her right now.

You'd be surprised at how many kids starting out refuse to take a sales positon. Or if they do, they want to be order takers instead of true salesmen. They will answer their phone (sometimes) but they don't follow up. They won't make cold calls. They won't engage with the potential customers.

It's amazing how hard it is to get people who are willing to sell.

if the job is in Austin area she would be interested

Austin was flooded with tech sales and marketing people and as they got laid off they ended up spilling over and taking sales and marketing jobs in other fields

the problem with a sales job is nobody is hiring entry level sales because they have nuked their training programs

so a 24 year old with no sales experience interviewing for sales jobs is tough because she has very little training, no track record and little prospects

if companies are hiring it is economical and proven sales and marketing people, not Gen X and definitely not entry level

Gen X are becoming too expensive and Gen Z are unproven or untrained

This seems particularly vulnerable to AI/GPT/whatever.

What is she saying about that, if anything?

her specialty is projects like product rollouts and team driven stuff
like putting ad and sales campaigns together
obviously the benefits of AI is using less people so marketing teams are a fraction of what they used to be
the bigger problem in Austin is all of the older GenZ and Millennials moving there from CA and IL and NYC

they are driving up the real estate and taking all of the jobs

Do you think a bankrupt company was right on their market salaries?

Maybe they were paying their office workers too much?
