What is the difference? Are we listening to doctors or scientists? Also, in the medical profession, has practicing medicine always been considered ‘science’.

I keep hearing trust the science and this is same line the sky screaming earth people say as well. Just wasn’t sure if this was a political spin or real terminology I never noticed in the past.

I will also start calling my doctor a scientist to test it. Suspect he will get pissed.

Medicine is two parts science and one part practice.

Doctors are practitioners? Scientists are researchers?

Obviously there are similarities between the two, but doctors are concerned with using existing knowledge to treat illnesses and promote health. Scientists work to add to that knowledge.

As a doctor, I find this reasonable regarding Covid. However, for certain causes (like global warming), the threshold to be a “scientist” is much lower.

Doctors tend to practice evidence based medicine, i.e. they use the available science to backup their practice methods. So I’d say on that end doctors are both.

fair enough, though there's some overlap. the specific scientists you want to be listening to with regard forecasting the epidemic are epidemiologists with a focus in infectious diseases. The physicians that have particular authority here will be infectious disease docs who have additional training in public health, especially if they've coordinated community responses to epidemics in the past.

Most articles I read that induce fear don’t include data or uses data in conflated ways. It’s a bunch of criticism of the current system/administration, fearmongering of hurting others, and warm fuzzies about doing your part.

This same observation tends to track CNN's task force briefings coverage, in that I've noticed that they will immediately cut away from the briefing once Trump's introductory statements and Q&A are complete. They segue into a screenful of pundits who promptly devour each and every word of the President.

In the meantime, the experts and officials are speaking away as to the most current data, actions and plans. CNN apparently isn't concerned with any of that mess. They blow that little part off. There's micro-analysis of the President's words to conduct for crying out loud.

THe main purpose of the question, -trust the science? Wtf does this mean. Are scientists in charge of lockdown and economic policies because they sure as hell haven’t done enough research to come up with a cure or vaccine. It’s a Coronivius strand, seems these are not new. IM just not sure WTF the scientists have done but the doctors are all in fighting this shite and everybody has their own opinion on what works best and when for treatment based on real learnings in the field. I’ve not seen anything from the scientists....making believe they are useless and can’t be trusted.

AndyJ, as a doctor, maybe you can speak to this.

We have seen many, many threads and news segments comparing the mortality rate of covid-19 to season influenza, reasonable or not. Since various flus and associated vaccines and treatments have been around forever and are just accepted as a fact of life, I am wondering if the statistical mortality rates for flu each year are just projections.

I assume that the presented number of those who actually die from flu while hospitalized are probably close to accurate. Are the number of cases of flu we see in a lot of the statistics just an assumption, "We assume that there are x number of cases of flu each year"?

Surely not the case for covid-19 yet. We are learning covid-19. We hear about confirmed cases. The counts are taken very seriously.

Are the statistical comparisons between flu and covid-19 apples to oranges?
