Do you think that the Republican Party has changed much in the previous 50+ years?

I say no, probably not. They were still the ones with a bit of sense back then, yet were too scared to have any push back against the other side.
Democrats, however, have come a long way from JFK, even if he was elected via fraud as much as Biden was.

If anything, the republican party has moved more left. More tolerant of same sex marriage, more tolerant of marijuana, etc.
But it's still not enough - the left still thinks we're extreme right terrorists. (and the biggest threat to american democracy BTW)

Neocons and Rockefeller Republicans destroyed the party. We could've had Robert Taft in 1948 and 1952. Instead we got Dewey and Ike. By the 1970's, the Trotskyist neocons had taken over the party and made pariahs out of conservative stalwarts like Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul.

Are you kidding? In 1972 we still had Rockefeller Republicans. Nelson Rockefeller was Vice President.
Nixon was about as liberal a Republican as you will ever find. He created the EPA and OSHA. He expanded SS benefits. He worked with insurance companies to create our current Healthcare disaster, and it was the Democrats who stopped him from mandating employers provide health coverage for workers.
Nixon proposed a minimum tax on the wealthy, and a guaranteed minimum income for the poor, but neither proposal got very far.
Reagan was more liberal in some ways than today's Republican Party. He wanted to close tax loopholes so the wealthy would "pay their fair share", He raised taxes 3 separate times. He expanded the EIT credit and saved Social Security. He broke with hardliners and compromised with the Soviets on arms control.
In the 70s, the Republicans had liberals and the Democratic Party had Dixiecrats and other conservatives. Then cable news channels emerged. They were immune from the fairness doctrine, and before long we had people just watching the news that bolstered their own beliefs.

IMO the Republican Party has moved to occupy the place formally held by my father's Democrat Party. I knew that was the case when I heard the Bush Repubicans peddling this "Compassionate Conservatism" malarkey. I recall thinking I'd better hold on to my wallet cause GWB et al is coming after it.
The Democrat party has moved far left. Far left.
"Read my lips". - George H.W. Bush

Yep. Most Republicans now would match or be left of JFK on most issues.

The Republican Party drifted a little right, then back left. It is mainly a centrist party, certainly since HW Bush.
In contrast to the sharp, violent shift to the far left that has categorized the Democrat Party, particularly since the re-election of Obama 10 years ago.

That would be true, except for the crazy Freedom Caucus and the Trump base that is currently holding the Republican party hostage. If true Republican leaders were so scared of being labeled a RINO and losing Trump's base, it would be a great party.

yes it changed a lot.
during the first bush we still had a majority conservative GOP, after that they went down the rabit hole chasing the idea they need to be more moderate to win elections and thats when they started replacing conservatives with rinos and by the time bush 2 was in office they started openly removing all conservatives from any and all committees or any position of power and control. turtle and the rinos have been controlled opposition working along with dimrats ever since making sure no conservative ever gets support to win an election unless they had absolutely no other choice and if the conservative won, they were ostracized within the GOP to never had any power to do anything.

I think we have allowed our silence to be largely interpreted as tolerance.
I'm not tolerant of these alphabet freaks at all. Not gays, not homosexuals, just the blue-haired fatties posing for attention.
eta: I have gay family members who refuse to identify with these alphabet posers. Can't say I blame 'em.

Todays RINO Republican occupies the place to left of center and beyond a blue dog democrat.

I don't know if the repubs changed or if I simply became more aware of them.

Without the MAGA movement the GOP would be a terrible and unelectable party.

I mean, I don't disagree here necessarily. But the Democratic Party is just as terrible and unelectable.
