Maybe, but ole black face beat the ever living dog shite (9 points) out of Gillespie, who by all accounts was a decent mainstream GOP conservative. And this was 2017, the year after Trump won.
You can’t tell me you actually believe there’s no relation between those two events. Parts of VA (like chesterfield) that hadn’t gone blue since the 60s even flipped.

The goal was to open the door to removal. The goal was not about shrinking the State.
I have great respect for my Confederate ancestors (one of whom has a VERY nice, prominent statue in Houston), and I oppose removal or destruction of the memorial statues in question.
I also feel VERY strongly in the importance of keeping autonomy as local as possible. The notion of a state dictating to a locality what artwork the locality may display on municipal property runs 100% counter to that principle.
When the two are in conflict, I lean towards the broader macro principle, even if it will work contrary to my views on the micro issue.
Here, it is silly to pretend that the Virginia legislature undertook this action out of respect for the macro principle, rather than because they differ from me on the micro issue.
It bothers me, but sometimes people do the right thing for the wrong reasons.

That’s not to say a better candidate would have overcome the Democratic demographic advantages.

I don’t know if this is Scotch-Irish influence, or Norman English influence. But there are strict limits to any one persons power over another in Virginia culture. Personal autonomy is huge. There are things I get to have an opinion on, and there are things that are just none of my business.
With the monuments, really the only people who would have standing are descendants of Confederate veterans. And that’s it.
In a sense, we all “own” them. And if we wanted to take them down. That would be one thing. But we generally don’t. That would be like toppling tombstones.

The whole “you can’t erase history” is a good idea in theory And well intentioned. You can’t and you shouldn’t, that’s true.
What makes NO sense is the idea that taking down a statue = “erasing history”. That’s absurd and hasn’t been true since the printing press. Can someone point out one example to the contrary?

Even so, I'm more in favor of leaving these monuments to traitors up...and then adding to them. Maybe put a plaque or other display in Lee's Circle next to the statue explaining how it was a tantrum of White Supremacism that led to the construction of the monument in the first place.
You can tell all of these monumentalists are actually full of shite, though. Because when any new monuments or other acts of memorialization (like the Whitney Plantation or putting H Tubs on some money) are nominated yet disagree with whatever worldview they have, the melt is nearly complete.

This sounds like the argument the Chinese Communist party makes in keeping up all their Mao crap. Yes Mao was flawed, but he is a major part of Chinese history (actually it goes Mao 70% good / 30% bad and we don’t want to talk about it anymore and will throw you in jail if you do)
