Is that a thing that would depend on state law? His name is the only one on the deed. A quick search tells me that in some states people can do this for tax purposes.

It can also be a different loophole. House reps and senators have a special tax clause loophole, regarding dual properties.
Loophole exists so they can have a property in the district that votes them in, and still live elsewhere in their state of residence.
Or say, have a property in DC.
Then you also get into the millionaire's bracket where none of their properties are under their own names to avoid taxes from their higher earnings bracket.
