I think unlike Kristol French actually does hold socially conservative views. And I think he is a Christian, which Kristol obviously is not.
I just think French got himself into a feedback loop of sorts and can't find his way out of it (and may not want to given the increase in prominence it provided).
French was a socially conservative Christian writer who got no respect from MSM/the left before Trump. Now he's lauded as a veteran and insightful Christian lawyer in those corners because he writes incessantly about Trump. He lectures "his own people" about Trump, gets negative feedback, and becomes even more jaded, etc.
