I'm not a campaign junkie and I don't follow polls, but I think two things will get you closer to the truth than anything else.
1- Watch a traditional* campaign to see what they think their internal polls are saying. They'll lie in press releases but they usually don't lie with their money. If they're dumping money somewhere they think it's competitive.
2- Raw numbers are always suspect but trends are usually truthful. Maybe not the magnitude but you should pay attention to the direction.
* I have no idea if this logic applies to Trump's campaign
