Considering they have been losing, picking the “safest white boy” may be a better option.
The best option may be to shut the frick up on dumbass policies that don’t appeal to most of the country so they can pretend, at least, to be moderates until they get into power.
Worked for Slick Willy and Barry Buttfricker. But I don’t think they are smart enough or disciplined enough to do it anymore.

I don't know where they are headed, but I noticed that just after Trump won the election, that Newsome immediately went "chameleon". He conveyed that he actually has quite moderate views!
