CRASH AND BURN: ‘Monday Night Football’ Ratings CRATER, Some Games Down 38%

It’s now what we can call a trend in the sports world. NFL television ratings for Week 1 of the season have been down at nearly every turn.

This started with a dramatic decrease in viewership for the Kansas City Chiefs’ home opener against the Houston Texans last Thursday. The backdrop to that game was the limited number of fans on hand at Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri booing the teams’ social stances during the national anthem. It did not stop from there.

NFL Week 1 ratings in decline, culminating on “Monday Night Football”

According to ShowBuzz Daily, the doubleader on Monday night represented a major downtick in viewership from the same time slots a season ago.

Steelers at Giants: This game drew 10.8 million viewers on ESPN, down 21% from the early-game opener during Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season
Titans at Broncos: Drew 7.7 million viewers, down a whopping 38% from the late game last year.
These are just some startling numbers right here. They are also a continuation of a trend around the NFL world thus far on the young season.

This comes after the “Sunday Night Football” matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Rams in Los Angeles saw a drop of 16.1% from last season’s opener. America’s Team being unable to draw 15 million viewers during a global pandemic in which people are at home more often than in the past can’t be seen as great news for the NFL.

The “Monday Night Football” doubleheader is also interesting in that it included one of the two teams in the nation’s largest media market (New York Giants) opening things up against another big media market team in that of the Pittsburgh Steelers. LINK

Cancelling Hank Williams Jr was the final straw for me. I think I'm done for good.

When we get the adjusted ratings for MNF, it will go up umpteen percentage points.

Also, why do you care what grown men watch?

Also, it’s Covid.

Also, why do you hate black people?

Basically Bucs at Saints was the only game that was up, and that was a fascinating once in a lifetime type of matchup. It’s really the only game that I “watched” and I did so on an illegal stream which means no ratings points from me.

Haven’t watched a second, so much other things to enjoy in life. Probably spent too much time in the past, watching, which I only realized recently...

I’ll be in that number again on an illegal stream

I know you are just trolling but I’ll respond anyway.

NFL will not collapse or anything but it would be nice if they made any attempt at all to appeal to casual fans. You know, like any entertainment product should.

I think it would be amazing if Saints allow fans later in the season and the fans cheer a Malcolm Jenkins injury which causes all sorts of chaos and outrage from the left again.

Am I a bad person for rooting for stuff like this to happen?

The commentator crew was a little better than in previous years, but MNF is still plagued with amateur graphics, poor production value, and terribly unexciting matchups. The double headers are dumb, too. The first game was a blowout, and the second one was a sloppy defensive game that didn’t start until after 11 on the East Coast.

They can’t blame Covid. If anything Covid would increase viewership. Most sports leagues have done everything in their power these last couple months to alienate their fan bases. Time to pay the piper.

Couldn't use Hank's songs any more. Quarantine means no more rowdy friends coming over.

The Covid situation made it that much easier for me to walk away from football.
