it is meant to take down Russia. Met with a Russian CFO in 2014 working on a deal with his company that was funded by a Russian oil oligarch who had pumped profits into R&D for oilfield technology. Russian oil wells are financed by World Bank which had put limits an their flaring natural gas at the wellhead (oil wells to far away to run a puissant gas pipeline too) Per him they needed $50 per barrel to breakeven.
FWIW, our negotiations didn't work out but my partner and I maintained a good relationship with him and got other business from him. though promising their technology didn't work as expected and we would have lost our assses

Saudi oil should/could help trump with lower energy prices. He has, on at least 2 occasions, pleaded with SA to depress oil prices via Twitter.

Cheap oil is great for the economy. People that extract and sell crude are only a part of the economy. Don't lump downstream O&G with upstream. Refineries are going to be going full tilt if oil is that cheap.
