The text of the poem is self-explanatory. Just read it.

I have read it, and I think it is quite lovely. The sentiment is moving, there is no doubt about it.

Back to policy, though...

xiv: "With the poem in mind, it is better for the taxpayers of the United States to favor allowing large numbers of immigrants who exhibit inability to be self-sufficient into the country because _________"

Its so, so rare, to see you.. when presented with a polite, articulate counterpoint... respond with anything other than troll-ish dribble.

If you have a point, make it. It would show some intellect.

Will you fricking do some work for your clients or do you just do wills for family members?

JFC

I hope you aren't billing while trying to one up strangers on the internet. That's called stealing.

Already made my point. It rustled your jimmies. That requires no further action on my part. They’re your jimmies, not mine.

Why engage the troll?

You get the same result every time.

Fine. But until then we should enforce the law currently on the books.

Delivering an emotional statement not based in reality is NOT making a point.

You said that the law should mimic the poem. That is a statement devoid of rationale.

We'd like to know why?? Show us those brain cells can actually articulate a position.

Not gonna happen. It’s because the law doesn’t work and isn’t good.

1. The reason for the Frogs’ gift of Lady Liberty was not related to immigration, but rather as a monument to and symbol of democracy.

2. The connotations of symbols change with time. When Lady Liberty was erected, NYC was about 30% foreign-born and they came to associate her with their own experiences.

3. This changing symbolism is reflected in the poem, which was penned even before the statue was erected.

4. Oddly enough, it was not long after the statue was erected that the US started imposing ever-stricter limitations on immigration.

5. By the time the plaque was added, NYC was 40% foreign-born, but public sympathy in the country was ready shifting toward greater limits on immigration.

Wow. There's a surprise. The king (or queen, don't want to assume gender) of melts accusing someone else of melting.

Is this my cue to tell you that you made some good points one time but now you ruined it by saying Frogs?

ETA: Unrelated to you... the next few posts show why I was right not to engage in any in-depth debate with the people posting them.

Melt.

I own you.

Double melt.

Biggest melt of all time.

I figured that schtick out in two days; I have no idea why anybody even tries.

So, they had to have about $450.00

I could buy a pretty sweet used car in the early 70's for that amount. Just think what i could buy in 1880.

Too bad. It’s the law and will always be the law, no matter how much you wish it not to be.

It’s you. You keep caring about an inscription on a statue and the rest of us will care about the law.

Melt on.

are we also going to return to a society without a welfare state, like when the poem was written?

if not, this argument is silly
