Washington (CNN) — The US Army is awarding medals for heroism to three students killed in last week's school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Alaina Petty, Peter Wang and Martin Duque, all students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, were also cadets in the school's Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program and will receive the Medal of Heroism for their actions in last Wednesday's shooting.
Petty's family was presented with her medal at her funeral service Monday, and Wang's family was due to receive his medal at his service Tuesday morning, where Wang was to be buried in his JROTC uniform, according to Army spokesman Michael Maddox.
"The JROTC Heroism medal will be on his uniform, but a second 'keepsake' medal," will be given to the Wang family, Maddox said.
Duque's family will be presented with his medal during a service on Saturday.
Wang was shot repeatedly while holding a door open to let other people escape. "He died a gentleman holding the door for other students," his classmate Kelsey Friend told CNN after the shooting.
Awards for other possible cadets are going through the review process. Maddox said the current focus is on "supporting the funerals and dignity and honor, so deserved by these cadets and their families."
According to the Army, the Medal of Heroism is awarded to a JROTC cadet "who performs an act of heroism."
"The achievement must be an accomplishment so exceptional and outstanding that it clearly sets the individual apart from fellow students or from other persons in similar circumstances," according to the criteria laid out by the Army. "The performance must have involved the acceptance of danger and extraordinary responsibilities, exemplifying praiseworthy fortitude and courage."
Seventeen people were killed in the shooting.

West Point posthumously admits shooting victim Peter Wang to Class of 2025
U.S. Military Academy West Point is posthumously admitting Florida school shooting victim Peter Wang, who dreamed of attending the prestigious academy.
Wang could have been in the Class of 2025. The 15-year-old’s funeral is today.
West Point will confer a letter of admission, along with honorarium tokens, to his family, local West Point alumni Chad Maxey said.
Wang died in his JROTC uniform on Wednesday, holding the door open to allow others to escape, as gunman Nikolas Cruz shot and killed 17 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, authorities and witnesses said.
Gov. Rick Scott directed the Florida National Guard to honor Wang and two other members of JROTC at their funerals.
Maxey said a local veteran group read of Wang’s dream of attending the academy, and confirmed with a cousin that it was true. He said Capt. Shahin Uddin was flown to South Florida to provide the posthumous letter to the family.
“This story … has kindled so many hearts for action in a time when things have felt so hopeless,” Maxey said in a text message.
Only one other high school student has received an honor like this, Maxey said LINK

Glad they are getting the recognition!
My son is in JROTC and I just can't imagine what these families are going through.

Army gonna be handing out a lot of medals in the future, based on this precedent.
Not that it's necessarily a bad thing.
Nice symbolic thing to do.

This whole situation angers me.
These students deserved some ability to protect themselves during this attack, or have someone at the school have a weapon to protect them, not be awarded with posthumous medals.
These kids in gun free, security free zones are nothing but sitting ducks for criminals.
