Because they could.
Trump is not a politician and contrary to the belief on this board, that isn't necessarily a good thing.
They knew they could do to him what they couldn't do to more seasoned politicians, and he would fall into their traps.
And he did. he made it easy for them and they decided to start taking it to extremes. Because they could.
Other, better politicians won't be so sloppy.

Democrats always try to do bad things and lie. The key is how you fight back and if you are prepared. Being outraged that the Democrats have no morals and don't play fair just makes you into a mark.

Trump has given them everything…this isn’t a Republican/Democrat fight- this is all things Trump fight …the only side swipes will be because the republicans let Trump act a fool and were too afraid of him (and his blind trump supporters) to call it out

Just follow along with the corporate oligarchs that control the deep state and you will be fine. It will suck for the rest of America but except for maybe a few but the president will do great in the presidency as long as he does what he is told by the deep state directly and implicitly. Just accept the fact that the president of the U.S. is no stronger than the King of England is to England.

Its 100% true. Its also 100% morally wrong, despicable behavior.
