I note that no one has replied to my historic (and very true) reference to the Battle of Alamance in NC prior to the official onset of the Revolutionary War. This (and the actions of the patriots in Boston) is what prompted and helped insure the 2nd Amendment in the Bill of Rights. It is simply a protection guaranteed to the people, by the people without limitation. Good luck with an amendment that takes away my rights.

Just thinking out loud. The context of military grade weapons has changed so dramatically, and in 2018 even a citizenry with full auto weapons has no chance against the armed forces of a first world power.

You don’t beat them on the battlefield. You keep them from having the ability to impose unwanted legislation on the population though force (without risking mass casualties).

Good luck rolling out artillery and air strikes on American neighborhoods. Slaughtering your own people is a tough way to stay in their good graces, and if you plan on anything as drastic as doing away with elections you have a fight on your hands anyway. Better to have guns than not in this instance

With an armed population they better be damn sure about what they want to impose, because it’s a lot harder to do. That alone gives the people power thus restricting the absolute power of the government

ETA: Lose your freedom of speech and good luck keeping your guns, lose your guns and good luck keeping your freedom of speech.

These things were literally the first two amendments in the bill of rights written by men dead set on preventing tyranny over the population. Both are invaluable and protect each other

Sure. Why not?

And just to make it a little more personal, our family’s ancestors fought in the pre-revolutionary battles in North Carolina in the late 1760’s early 1770’s as “Regulators” (sound familiar?) against the Crown. One was hanged and generally regarded as one of the first patriots of the revolution. There is a significant group of people out there who may not own a gun who believe totally in the Bill of Rights, of which the 2nd Amendment is a part.

On top of that, one of the earliest maneuvers of the Revolutionary War was to secure cannon before the British took them. The colonists had the most powerful weaponry of the day at their disposal.

There's a reason why the 2nd Amendment is very high on the list.

pretty sure we could have conquered Iraq in the time it takes to drop a nuke if we had wanted to. Kind of proves your point is moot.

Does this mean that any adult has the right to own/carry any kind of arms they choose?

It is often overlooked but the 2A is about more than firearms.

It applys to:

knives
daggers
swords
tomahawks
pikes
battle axes
maces
poleaxes
bows
crossbows
clubs
etc.

Is this what a gun ban does? Then yes.

I am hearing more talk of a Constitutional Amendment here and there.

This is the honest, legal and democratic way of going about so I welcome moving the debate into this arena rather than nibbling around it.

Let's conviene that Constitutional Convention of the States, I have some amendment ideas too.

Ah, regulation. Saying it’s ok to own a shotgun but not a bazooka.

Would you support citizens being able to own land to air missiles?

The US v. Miller stated pretty emphatically that the 2nd Amendment includes firearms that can be considered "ordinary military equipment". At the very least the 1986 FOPA is a direct violation of that decision but that is a battle for another day. 2nd Amendment rights have been chipped away for decades and it will take decades to set it right again

I agree that their intentions are clear in their personal writings. The problem is they didn't make the 2nd precise enough. I wish they would have added a sentence or two for clarification on what restrictions, if any, they envisioned.

Using their writings to interpret the law is the same as the circuit courts using Trump's stump speeches to interpret his travel ban. Wouldn't you agree?
