re: City of Houston demands pastors turn over sermons

There are a lot of jimmies rustled over nothing here. A party to a lawsuit has issued a subpoena to non-parties and the non-parties have moved to quash the subpoena.
Happens every hour of every day in some court in America.
Unless there is something further than the OP's link, there hasn't been a ruling from the Court.
So IOW, nothing has happened.

K, if you say so.

Let me repeat for the slow learners.... parties to a lawsuit subpoena records from non-parties every hour of every day somewhere in this country. And non-parties move to quash those subpoenas.
If the Court doesn't quash them, then you can get your jimmies rustled. But as of at least the OP's link, nothing has happened.
If you're a lawyer and you're not trying to discover as much as you can in a lawsuit, then you're not doing your job.

And none have any more significance than the others. They're all pretty much equal in scope and significance. Right?

If they are squashed the harm is less, but the evidence of the mayor being a problem is worse. That would mean there was no legal basis for the subpoena and the mayor really was just trying to bully political enemies.

How does this bill apply to churches anyway? Or any private entity? Should this not just be for public and govt. facilities?

Here we go. We have been watching this slowly develop for 20 years. Pastors have been arrested for speaking out against homosexuality and/or made to stop.
It's been happening in the US to a degree, and it going to continue and to get worse.
The line has moved yet again. The end result is for anybody who disagrees with them to be silenced, shut down and accept it.

I'm pretty sure they subpoenaed the very direct opponents in the coalition opposing the ordinance...I'm not sure if there are any mosques involved.

This is the 100% truth, and yet posters still continue to get their jimmies rustled.
It's a subpoena. It can be quashed. As to the poster who was talking about significance, I don't think either federal or state rules distinguish subpoenas based on significance.

You get that is crazy, right? "Because there is a remedy, who cares about the action!"
So if Bush ordered all the gays into a camp to prevent the spread of AIDS (or some other stupid bullshite); you would be fine with it, because there is a legal remedy. His action would be nullified by the courts for a number of reasons, so no need to get in a huff!
No, there would very much be a need to get upset over a stupid move like that. And while this is an order of magnitude (or two) less stupid, it is still horrible. The cure doesn't not absolve the originator of the problem.
NOW, if it turns out a rational argument can be made why these church sermons are actually useful, I will change my tune. I'd like to know, best case scenario, what were they hoping to get?
Until then, it's a BS political attack on political opponents using the legal system (which is bad enough) which is made worse because the targets are churches.

Damn if some of you people aren't dense. The point is, its discussion worthy.

You keep clinging to this tangential connection. None of the pastors are party to the suit.

I read the article, and it is very troubling.
I am going to Houston for a wedding in a few weeks. I now will attempt to not spend a single penny in the city limits. frick that mayor and her city that put her there.

How many links does it require?

It might be. But, it's an indictment on the broad scope of Rule 45 (or the state equivalent) rather than the parties.
A federal court subpoena is really easy to issue. So why not cast a wide net?
If there is a genuine abuse issue, the court will level the appropriate blow.

No, just because a tool exists, does NOT mean you have to use it. This is not a private party; this is the Mayor of Houston.

bullshite. That will never in a million years happen.

There was a law passed in the UK to deal with sport fans. The law was used to arrest a man you stated homosexuality was a sin.
