I imagine you think it shouldn’t be nearly as offensive when used in a unmistakenly non-offensive way. And it being damn near a death sentence for anyone who uses it in the wrong place at the wrong time is bad and gets taken advantage of and can ruin lives.
Most everyone can agree there.
But it being used over and over in a threatening way while they’re hovering around you should be viewed as highly offensive and downright scary. That behavior should be seen as erratic and very questionable.
Y’all can’t claim someone is weak or dumb for losing their cool over that. Y’all would cheer a cowboy knocking the shite out of anyone for saying heinous shite to him and his mom and hovering over them and doing the equivalent to what this jerk does.

I agree, and I would have ignored him. But, harassing language isn't necessarily protected speech. This guy usually harasses people who are minding their own business.
It's not even just about the N word. If a man is with his small child and some foul mouthed thug runs up to the child hurling insults, the guy will reasonably respond with violence. The thug doesn't get to shoot the man in self defense if he's the provocateur.
