So, based on your personal experience you make the leap in logic that those who stay within the faith they were born into have not thought critically about that faith. This is an assertion without proof but again is based in your own false assumptions.

No, I based it on the statistics which you ignored. Its a fact that most religious people were born into it. Less than 20% of Americans who claim christianity are converts and that number is even lower for judaism and islam. Of that 17% or so, most were converted from another religion or a deistic/general theist perspective. The rate of people born to atheist/agnostic parents who become religious isnt even large enough in this country to survery.

His only position is attacking Christianity with random "facts" and vague inferences that have nothing to do with the original premise of discussion

It really got badly derailed from a "I completely misread this article as science finding proof there was just 1 man int he begging in"

Im about to check out of this thread for good myself. Once it gets this deep into religion people lose interest in discussion and just get defensive. Its unproductive, and I'll end up banned if I have to deal with matt's outbursts much longer.

I ignored them because they were irrelevant.

Atheists such as yourself frequently rely on statistics and appeals to authority because it helps them "win" an argument. You are more concerned with proving your position than an actual search for truth.

I dont consider myself an atheist, Im definitely more in the "I cant know but see no reason to believe" agnostic camp.

My "search for truth" began a long time ago and will continue for the rest of my life. My intent is not to prove to anyone there is no God because I dont know that nor is it to win an argument. My point is to get people thinking.

The assertion was made that christians think more deeply about what they believe than atheists and agnostics and I offered evidence and reasoning for why I believe that is not the case.

I think the assertion either way is faulty.

But regarding your "evidence" to the contrary, statistics are often misleading. I could counter the argument with respect to believers with doctorates by pointing out that a higher percentage of physicists are believers than biologists. No one is likely going to argue that biologists are the deeper thinkers, so I could reasonably assert that the more intelligent doctorate holders are more likely to be Christians.

the Theory of Evolution is correct, doesn't it seem strange that a random process would've created only one man and one woman? I think this study raises a lot of questions, none of which were addressed in the other thread.

You are not understanding the findings.

Chromosomal Adam and Mitochondrial Eve are not the first humans.

They weren't even in the same area of the earth.

They are simply the most recent common ancestors of each GENDER of humans.

ETA:

Just saw this was 17 pages, I am sure (I hope) someone beat me to it.

Atheism is an emperor with no clothes. When followed through logically it is completely incoherent. But very few of those who identify as atheists ever think it through to its logical out workings.

This is utter nonsense.

science doesn't know and can't know but I think many of the attests would say I'm wrong but would love to discuss it if you guys want to keep the thread around.

Yes. The Big Bang has been explained.

We don't know where matter came from.

I was just going to explain that gravity is the force that holds space-time together. The Big Bang actually wasn't the beginning. The universe is a cycle of expanding until collapsing in upon itself and therefor creating a Big Bang.
As for matter, the new theory is that normally matter and anti-matter cancel each other out but we seem to have an excess of matter without an anti-matter to counteract. Essentially, what we call matter is the remainder of that imbalance.
In the end, there are many questions yet to be answered and in that we find the idea of god. Of course, when there were many more unanswered questions then myth and mythology played a more dominant role. As science begins to answer question, mythology becomes extraneous.

This is the age of science where all questions will seemingly, one day, be answered. The crux of this thread seemed to be "how does something come from nothing" and that, in the end, would be the justification for god. However, religion may be playing with borrowed money.

If this was already covered then my apologies.
