Commies and Socialists sure love their trains.

Very true. No matter how much the Chinese steal, they just can't seem to get their aerospace egg's together. Very much skeptical of the hype surrounding this train.

There actually ARE corridors where hi-speed rail could be economical and efficient in the US, but they are rare.
For true long distance, air will always be best. For short distances, cars and buses will always be best.
For trips from about 250m to 500m, rail can work, but only under the right conditions. First, high population at each end of the run. Second, LOTS of travel between the two markets, such that air routes have become saturated and supply/demand have caused the cost-per-mile of air travel to have increased significantly. Third, ground routes between the markets are also congested.
The Northeast may meet these criteria. Dallas-Houston is coming close. There is a flight about every 15 minutes, and the interstate can be a parking lot. But here comes the next problem.
For the run to be efficient timewise, it must also be non-stop. You ALWAYS get little communities who want a “stop” on the run. The current discussion re Houston-Dallas is a perfect example. Political pressure is dictating a stop in Bryan-College Station. That is STUPID, because BCS does not satisfy ANY of the criteria for efficient rail travel, but Aggies have lots of political muscle.
By comparison, El Paso and San Antonio are large, but there is not THAT much travel between them. Only a few flights per day, so the cost of air travel can stay low. Too far to drive, and the distance is so great that the infrastructure costs would doom rail to financial ruin.
I don't think I disagree, but I think that the economical high speed rail is a bit more plausible than you'd think, and I still think we need a ton more airports. Most metropolitan areas, DFW/Houston included(which are the 4th and 5th largest in the US), at most, contain one large and one medium sized airport, and that has remained largely unchanged for decades.

You want real evidence of the US being behind?
I used to get better Mexican food in Beijing than I can get in Northern Minnesota.
Fix that, and then I will worry about a choo-choo train they got rolling 40-something years after we walked on the moon.

Maybe the problem is that Amtrack is a shitty government monopoly and the rail lines are owned by freight rail companies that collude rather than compete while empowered by federal regulations that give them zero incentives to innovate or even maintain their existing lines let alone accommodate new traffic on existing lines. The federal government has also made railroads largely unaccountable to state and local governments.
Maybe the problem isn’t high speed rail or rail transportation as a concept, but America’s corrupt cronyism in the transportation industries and our idiotic TSA that is the problem?

A plane does it in 2 hours and 40 minutes

But it takes an hour to get to the airport, an hour to wait in line through security, 30 minutes to taxi, and then an hour from the airport to wherever you’re going. So that 2.5 hour plane ride actually takes about 5 hours.
The crossover between driving and flying, convenience wise, is typically around 6 hours by car.
Trains are great for shorter distances because you basically get the time in your commute back. You can spend it working, watching tv, etc instead of sitting in stop and go traffic.
