Koch on the criminal justice system

quote:

Ten years ago, he began giving money to support efforts by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers to help train defense lawyers and reverse what some see as a national trend to get tough on crime, which has resulted in the tripling of the incarceration rate since the 1980s and has stripped the poor of their rights to a legal defense.

He’s going to give more to that effort, he said.

“Over the next year, we are going to be pushing the issues key to this, which need a lot of work in this country,” Koch said. “And that would be freedom of speech, cronyism and how that relates to opportunities for the disadvantaged.”

The nation’s criminal justice system needs reform, “especially for the disadvantaged,” Koch said, “making it fair and making (criminal) sentences more appropriate to the crime that has been committed.”

quote:

Holden said legislators in recent decades drifted into a habit of adding more laws every year and taking stands to show themselves as “getting tough on crime.” It has gone too far, Holden said.

The weight has fallen most heavily on minorities, Holden said.

It has festered in neighborhoods and fostered the anger of people protesting against police actions in Missouri and New York. And, Holden said, “It definitely appears to have a racial angle, intended or not.”

Doesn't fit the narrative so it is all lies. And you are racist for spreading the lies.

And I am racist for bumping the thread.

I applaud his efforts in this. But I have to ask you...do you agree with him on this topic? Does the board agree with him on this topic?

I was actually thinking about it this morning, not with the Koch Bros but on another issue. The false right/left paradigm is trapping too many people.

The excessive use of Koch ads may have turned folks against the dems up in the last frontier state

You've been on the kick that there's a racial angle to the whole thing?

The outside groups buying Begich ads lost the election for him. It was horrible. They tried to tie Sullivan to the Koch bros and failed miserably. No one cared.

The Koch brothers, my personal heroes, are libertarians. So of course they are against the police state.

Do you know who Ron Paul is? Just curious. This was discussed fairly often over the past decade or so. Paul has pushed the unfair nature of the CJ system for a long time and yes, I agree.

quote:

Blacks disproportionately imprisoned for victimless crimes. (Jan 2012)
Cancel the drug war, and cancel its violence. (Nov 2011)
Our drug war is driving our immigration policy. (Sep 2011)
We don't need laws to tell us to not use heroin. (May 2011)
Drug War allows drug lords to make a lot more money. (Apr 2011)
Someday we'll wake up and end the Second Prohibition. (Apr 2011)
War on drugs is out of control; revert control to states. (Dec 2007)
Repeal most federal drug laws; blacks are treated unfairly. (Sep 2007)
Inner-city minorities are punished unfairly in war on drugs. (Sep 2007)

LINK

The black community is harmed far more by the drug laws and C/J system than any other at the present time.

the policy isn't racist, but the effects disproportionately affect different races differently

black people from the inner city bear the brunt of the WOD. this isn't some novel concept on this board

hell it's not even novel in terms of national politics. rand paul said just as much not long ago

Absolutely. Ending the WoD would benefit the black community the most.

I'm pretty sure the board overwhelmingly agrees with him on this topic.

They give out a large sum every year to organizations like Cato and the American Enterprise Institute and sponsor several interns in DC every semester who all support reforming the CJ system in our nation.

I think it's very novel for you to assert that the board believes the WoD somehow UNJUSTLY impacts black people. e.g. The typical response when somebody points out the absurdly asymmetric powder/crack mandatory sentencing laws is "hey, don't do drugs in the first place and you won't have to worry about anything".

The article even goes on to talk about the literal millions of imprisoned...which is a big part of the "absent black fathers" issue which doesn't usually get mentioned (at least not with proper context).

This article is full of beliefs that I think it's very questionable to say that "most of the board" agrees with.

The problem you have, is you participate in threads which interest you, mainly threads dealing with racial injustice that you start and attract posters that obviously care a great deal about arguing with you.

If you have been here for a few years and participated in a wide variety of threads you would find this issue has been discussed, and argued...many times over. It mainly deals with the WoD's and it's affect on black communities.
