CBS News looking pretty Nazi-ish right here

Btw, I'm pretty indifferent to abortion or at least don't pay much attention to it and things like this article can change that pretty quick.

Might get lots of flack for saying this, but it is my personal view that somebody with down syndrome can still enjoy the many of gifts that life offers, and that in most cases, such enjoyment outweighs the cost of never being born.

The ancient Spartans in Greece used to kill infants that exhibited any kind of birth defect. Those dudes were the first Nazi's.

Nor I - I am only opposed to very late term abortions and consider the aborting of a baby capable of surviving outside the womb to be nothing short of murder.
But - if detected early enough, what is wrong with abortion to avoid the consequence of known defects in the fetus?
I know that this is the start of the 'slippery slope' argument that results in 'designer babies' at the extreme end, but I would personally not want to sacrifice the future of my family in terms of financial commitments and lost opportunities if those could be avoided thru early detection of fetal defects.

Watching CBS now. I cant believe how liberal they have become. Nothing but opinion pieces so far.

I'm pretty neoliberal, and support a large number of center left views. You all know that.
You might not know that I adore people with Down, and I'm sickened by the idea of eliminating Down syndrome via abortion. I'm also against abortion in general, especially when very viable options are available.
At the church I attend, there's an absolute rockstar that's got Down. He's the sweetest person I know, and knows a hell of a lot more than anyone not close to him gives him credit for. If I didn't know him, and hadn't met other people with Down through him, I might think eliminating the possibility of people having it was a good idea.
But it isn't. He loves his life. His family loves him. And from a distant, clinical view, he's not worth having around. That's horse shite.
Get to know everyone. You can, and probably will, learn something from all of them.

I'm not advocating one way or the other, but there are different levels of downs. Unfortunately they can be extremely dependent. While I wouldn't myself want my gf/wife to have an abortion, I am not in the position to tell a couple who may hardly be ready for a healthy baby, that they have to take care of a special needs child. I do know a couple through camps, churches, music, etc that are very fun and outgoing, but there are also some who have a very hard time functioning in society. I guess my point would be your friend sounds amazing but that is one person out of a huge scale of what ifs, and simply not fair to force a very difficult (regardless of how rewarding) life on some people. Special needs children don't fly from the nest at 18, it's a lifetime commitment. I respect your friend though he (she?) sounds amazing :)

They can... but their poor parents are hostage for 40 years and usually become super religious and have to talk themselves into the belief that they have an "angel" on their hands. Certainly their right to do so, but as an outsider looking in it seems like a rotten situation.

If they find the 'gay' or tranny gene, the left will become rabid pro-lifers.

That's one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen.
Posted on 8/15/17 at 5:08 am to TrueTiger
I never really thought of that.... if they knew their baby was gonna be gay and started aborting gay babies we'd have a meltdown

Or maybe genes that make some people predisposed to violence. Why don't we just abort them before they ever even have a chance to commit a crime.

Tom cruise showed us that can be disproven

I thought it might be a joke, it's not...
"Olafsdottir responded, "We don't look at abortion as a murder. We look at it as a thing that we ended. We ended a possible life that may have had a huge complication... preventing suffering for the child and for the family. And I think that is more right than seeing it as a murder -- that's so black and white. Life isn't black and white. Life is grey."

He.
And there are other considerations. But the goal of eliminating Down at the expense of people like him is not a worthy one.
There is adoption. There is abortion is severe cases.
Moving to eliminate Down via eugenics isn't an idea I'll even entertain.

It's not up to you to entertain. It will be up to the parents.

Should we start mandatory sterilization for those prone to generate non perfect babies?

You sure have a wondrous lapdog attitude about many different people you can choose to get away from at any time.
Like the church lady said, "how convenient."
