How could any sane person support privatized police forces? One of the few true functions of the state is to protect people from enemies. As such, the army and the police forces perform the same exaxt function.

Because apparently farmers figured out they can still harvest cotton without slaves.

This will be a day long remembered on the Poliboard - the day I, a 26-year veteran of the U.S. military, called you and Joshjrn "statists".

A government police force is made up of private citizens paid with money taken from private citizens.

We're really only talking about alternative financing, because financing is the only thing the government does.

This is part of the social contract. We turn away from violent and chaotic anarchy (absolute, unbridled liberty) and turn towards a lot of liberty, but some protection. This requires at least some taxation. (to pay for army, police, etc).

So the state only exists to protect me from the state?

Makes sense.

Oh yeah that.

No one has been able to find the one I allegedly signed.

Do you know where it is?
I would like a handwriting expert to examine it for forgery.

The scary thing is that - if forced to choose between 90% of the government we have today and 10%, I'm MUCH closer to voting 10% than 90% - so, I should have scored higher. But because I'm so compromised and co-opted I scored lower - and the world, in fact, is not black and white.

51-90 points: You are a medium-core libertarian, probably self-consciously so. Your friends probably encourage you to quit talking about your views so much.

The assumption made by reasonable people is that even if the community did not formulate a contract long ago, the current community would have. It is a basic impulse of human nature to want protection, stability, continuity, and peace of mind. I bet Hemphead of 2014 would have signed a contract if Hemphead's ancestors of long ago did not.

Perhaps, perhaps not. It depends on the terms of the contract. I surely should not be beholden to a contract that I had no part in negotiating.

If this is what the contract says I'm supposed to be getting in return for my money, then I would have to say that the government is in breach.

For the record, I think government should have A VERY LIMITED role in our economic lives. I am only arguing in this thread that we are still better off with some government and a little less than total liberty, than no government and absolute liberty.

Am I an evil person for thinking that? I don't think government should be in healthcare, education, etc. We need a state for war, protection from eastern enemies, and to jail criminals who threaten the stability of society.

I fail to see how these services (which I do think are necessary) require a monopoly, that's all.
