re: Can we discuss China & our meat packing companies?

We need to decentralize our meat processing. We need meat processing all over the country, closer to the point of sale, processing livestock that is grown close to the processing plant. I understand the cost benefit of huge, centralized processing plants. However I believe our nation’s food supply would be much more resilient if we actually had more localized sourcing for fresh foods.
And we most assuredly should not have components of our food supply owned by foreign entities. Especially those with whom our relationship is tenuous on a good day.

I was wondering because there is a Smithfield Va. and there is a Smithfield NC. VA is the meat packing company.

Two weeks ago the grocery store near me was like that when I went there and the next day it was back to normal.
This is what I've been seeing. It goes from ZERO of the product to LOTS of the product the next day. Before the virus the product got low and then got high. The swings are more severe now.
The only thing that's been at zero for 2 months is Lysol spray.

Don’t believe anything has been 100% out for me but certain stuff is out about 90% of the time.
The main thing that has been consistently out at whatever store I go to is paper towels and TP.
Even with buying limits, huge shipments at Sam’s don’t last long, nor do shelves at Walmart or supermarkets.

Y'all can put Bamarep down for NEVER buying another Smithfield product again even though I loved their little pork loins.
frick em. I'll buy Hormel and US Foods even if it's twice as much.
Be sure to keep an eye out for other brands Smithfield owns. LINK There's some listed that I had no idea were owned by Smithfield.

Before COVID-19 I bought Clorox gel and cleaned everything with it. I can't find it anywhere.

When I used to live overseas on a Naval Base, everyone had large freezers. Our meats were frozen shipped on a barge.
I am wondering if people bought large deep freezers and stocked up because they were worried about shortage & inflation?

The democrats & republican lobbyists/politicians in bed with China don't care. They will never have to worry about food, jobs, paying the mortgage.

I don't use the gel but I use this...
..and there's lots of it.

I’d heard that there was a lot of hoarding but that people were doing it wrong.
As in “Some dumbasses bought up the meat before they went looking for freezers, only to find they were all sold out.”
But that was back in March.

I am in farm country and huge amounts of butcher hogs are being composted with wood chips. They chip the hog and the log together so they more readily decompose.
That last number I saw was 1.2 million head of hogs composted. Most likely much higher now since that was roughly 10 days or so ago.
On the cows exported, A guy was on Rush's show last week saying since the Country of Origin expired ( where they have to post where the meat originated)a lot of foreign meat is imported. I believe the guy said they export our meat and send their inferior and who knows how it was fed meats, etc to us. I check labels diligently to see where food comes from. I never buy anything that says China, Taiwan or anything from over there.
I just bought an 8+ pound boston butt this week for $.88 a pound. Made some awesome BBQ. Can't get much better than that price.
Have to add, the low wage immigrant packing plant employees are a big reason for the C-19 outbreaks happening now and all the meat plants closing down.
They bring in their diseases, and don't care if we get sick or die and live several families in a house so it spreads like wildfire. Then they go infect work. This is happening in SD, MN and Iowa and more than likely others as well.
I would love to ship out many millions of immigrant workers from here to never be seen again. Tom Donahue is against that.

We had a pretty good deer season last year so I can make it while without grocery store meat. We also took up canning vegetables last year. We did that anticipating food shortages but had no clue that it would be something like this and so soon.

Thanks for that information. Low wage immigrants getting sick makes a lot of sense.
I thought I heard that All imported beef cattle can be USDA stamped if they arrive alive. How much testing does the USDA do in checking out the meats for disease/swine & so forth? Lord knows, I know, the FDA gets paid to rubber stamp medical products, does the USDA do the same with imported meat products?
Also our generic antibiotics and meds made in China has got to end.
