Good question. I’ve wondered the same thing when I’ve heard people say that.

Just my opinion, but people planning on being dependent on SS do not make enough to put back the current 18k cap. I'm all for raising it but that alone will not be an incentive for them.

I thought this whole thing was about the middle class? Getting rid of this deduction would be a huge blow to the middle class. FWIW I’m ok with getting rid of basically all deductions and just slashing the tax rates/simplifying the tax code.

It's fricking ridiculous. They can't help but look for more ways to reach into people's pockets.

It's a matter of time before liberals get their hands on 401K money. The average American doesn't give a frick about promises made to people previously. It's why I find Roth IRA is to be somewhat suspect. Eventually there's going to be a bunch of people with large accounts in Congress is going to have something that sounds really cool and free for everybody else or at the least they'll justify the theft in the name of avoiding some pain.

Yes. There will be a time in my lifetime when they come for 401k monies in entirety and not just try to cap allowable contributions.

Yep, its coming

The hilarious part would be if people started taking their money out of banks so the govt couldn't get their hands on it. Their big bank buddies would be shitting bricks

Bitcoin went over $6000 today. There's a reason big banks like JP Morgan are afraid of it.

It's actually been done in other countries.

It's a bad idea.

But as long as they stay away from Roth, I'm selfishly ok with it

What a mess.

Just spend less.

Cap the war at current level and let inflation cut it down over the decades.

This is an outrage.
I was disappointed conservatives went along with the spendy big budget.

401K is one way to save for retirement. It's not the only, and for sure it's not the best. Considering the fact that most people believe that taxes will rise rather than go down, taking the tax hit now might not be a bad idea. Taxation could rise to 70% by the time you retire and then you are in deep water trying to survive that rate......... For disclosure, I have a 401K as well as other methods.
