You're smarter than this.

It isn't black and white on if tariffs are good or not, it's the renegotiation to level the playing field and try and slow the bleeding on our transfer of national wealth
I spent a couple decades in international construction, so having to deal with them was a fact of life, and did cut down on the profit potential.
Trump is attempting to force more manufacturing here as well as cut costs on imports by forcing foreign tariffs lower. Both benefit the US as the biggest consumer as well as the highest productivity is here.
That we are the biggest market is why countries not named China can’t sustain a trade war with the US for long.

How do some people not simply understand economic balance?

They're arguing for tariffs alone, without this ancillary strategy.

Catturd is arguing with a strawman there. Of course tariffs will make companies move, or keep, factories in the US. The point is that the American consumer will be hurt by having to pay more for those products. That’s what is meant by smart people who say “Tariffs don’t work.”
BTW, there are a lot of UK and EU companies that have been fleeing their high energy prices caused by Green Policies. Now that Trump is in office these are probably being rebranded as tariff initiated moves.
There is a hell of a lot of debate about whether tariffs can help industrialize a nation. It’s a very complicated subject that has several correct answers it seems. Protectionism seems to have worked well for China, but maybe they would be better off had they allowed free trade. Plus, they were benefitted by having a seemingly suicidal West as trading partners.
Trump has his finger on the pulse of this issue. We can’t keep outsourcing all of the jobs our lower class can do. We have to either protect some of these jobs or else reduce welfare programs so necessity drives these people to strat doing the jobs the immigrants have been doing. Trump seems to be taking a measured approach even amid the seeming chaos.

You "smart people" sure act dumb when it comes to breaking down the numbers

I’ll tell you what is dumb - assuming I am one of those people - that’s dumb!
I summarized an argument. I did not advocate that argument. You should be able to tell that by my ambivalence, expressed in the very post to which you responded, on whether tariffs work to help industrialize a nation.

You are on of the dumbest posters ever
And here we are again not getting any math from the "smart people"
Its just CNN talking points

Can do basic math.
That seems to be the difference.
And since Americans pretty much invented deliberate planned obsolescence, the notion that the same products manufactured here will last significantly longer than ones manufactured elsewhere is silly.
Keep grasping at straws, though. And while you're at it, explain why these tariffs will perform differently than the ones instituted in 2018, which we know for a fact cost American jobs, cost American businesses market share (which is why it cost net jobs) and raised prices.
Why is it going to be different this time?

What cannot be argued is that tarrifs hurt consumers with higher prices. Anyone who debates this point is an idiot.
And in the steel industry in this country, there is an 80:1 ratio of steel CONSUMERS to steel PRODUCERS. For the Einsteins on this board, that means there are 80 people that buy/use steel for every 1 person that actually make steel.
So tell me how steel tariffs help the steel consumers?

SDV, you and Fat Bastard provide nothing but insults. That is the calling card of stupid people. Of course, both of you are too stupid to know you’re stupid.
