Even in the progressive areas, Labour was going to get replaced by The Greens. Reform was going to sweep with over 70% of the vote, so they just cancelled the elections to hold onto power.

The UK doesn’t have scheduled major elections. The PM has to call the elections. If he waits too long then they occur automatically. So it is actually easier there to effect a dramatic change through elections than it is in the States where only a third of the Senate can be replaced.
