Gates also got the idea of a GUI from xerox...
Xerox developed a lot of stuff they didn't know how to apply it to the real world. The sold for cheap. Flat panel pioneers all started with either Xerox or Western Electric (Bell)
On manufacturing technology, most was developed by petrochemical companies. They discovered new compounds and best route to make them so developed processes to use them. Ultra pure high profit margins, made with men in lab coats. I learned about this when I was liquidating the flat panel line for subsidiary of Dow Chemical in the Bay Area. They were a month late in going into operation and lost market share so shut it down. $50 million written off all to secure a place for their high dollar chemicals to go to. It was no big deal for that division manager to lose that amount of money. The line previously made computer screen flat panels but converted in 2000 to make the coming smart phone screens.
Some of the buyers had been R&D engineers for Union Carbide and DuPont in the 60's & 70's
