A former SS officer known as the Bookkeeper of Auschwitz has been declared fit to go to prison.
Oskar Groening was convicted in July 2015 of being an accessory to the murder of 300,000 Jews and sentenced to four years in prison.
Oskar Gröning
Oskar Gröning (sometimes transliterated as Oscar Groening in English; born 10 June 1921) is a German former SS junior squad leader who was stationed at Auschwitz concentration camp. His responsibilities included counting and sorting the money taken from prisoners, and he was in charge of the personal property prisoners had arrived with. On a few occasions he witnessed the procedures of mass-killing in the camp. After being transferred from Auschwitz to a combat unit in October 1944, Gröning was captured by the British on 10 June 1945 when his unit surrendered. He was eventually transferred to Britain as a prisoner of war and worked as a forced labourer.

Is there no statute of limitations to this kind of charge? I guess obviously not, but I'm willing to bet this man has faced personal demons far worse than prison in his lifetime.
That being said, it is hard to muster up any sympathy for an SS officer and this is a small price to pay compared to the innocent people slaughtered at Auschwitz.

Part of me thinks at 96 years old this is an ugly part of history and imprisoning him now serves little point other than retribution. The other part of me thinks frick him, its retribution for his part of the Holocaust.

That is absurd. Dude didn't actually kill anyone.

It's good. It tells every other perpetrator of atrocities that the world will never forget.

Upon his return to Germany he led a normal life, reluctant to talk about his time in Auschwitz. However, more than 40 years later, he decided to make his activities at Auschwitz public after learning about Holocaust denial. He has since openly criticised those who deny the events that he witnessed, and the ideology to which he once subscribed. The recorded accounts he provided to the BBC, however, contributed to the decision and ability to prosecute him. His record as an activist against Holocaust deniers since 1985 was not taken into consideration.
Loose lips... sinks ships. Even when your cause is just. Perhaps he was attempting to right a wrong in his life. Well... that got him a prison sentence.

No but he still helped facilitate it. He's complicit even if he didn't pull the trigger.

You don't always get to choose your orders. You can be born in Germany, forced into the army during a world war, and be stationed at Auschwitz. Just saying
Not the case for all, but the case for a lot.

He spilled his guts on what he did 30+ years ago and now that he's 96 they're going to lock him up? Such an odd story. I'm not taking a position here exactly cause I don't suppose I have a problem with punishing genociders under any circumstance, it's just really peculiar.

So is the old lady who baked bread for the guards...the 17 year old kid who walked the fence...the german who was crippled at the eastern front who ended up there cause that was his orders...c'mon man.
If you guys use this formula there are hundreds if not thousands who should go too.

Sorry - you are right, bigot would have been a better term. Although, I don't think anyone here would really be accepting of people from the Middle East regardless of religion.
