"We have to let foreigners who don't read the language put American lives at risk because there are dumb Americans" is a really stupid argument.

fortunately that's not the argument I made
you realize damn near every gps service functions in multiple languages, right? make getting a cdl more difficult if you want a higher caliber driver, foreign born or not. language has little if any to do with it. are you incapable of driving in a foreign country?

It’s boggled my mind the fact that thousands and thousands of 18 wheelers go up and down down our highways every day driven by people that cannot read street signs at all

I’ve asked guys how they do it and they tell me they enter what street signs say into Google translator

Who’s been given these guys CDL’s for the last 10 years? To be honest, I probably encounter my first Truck Driver they couldn’t speak or read English 15 or 16 years ago.

This Executive Order was issued when the Trump administration announced the tariffs. Knowing that wide ranging tariffs would significantly impact the trucking industry, this EO was issued so that the non-English speaking drivers were the first to be let go in the nationwide contraction.

This is an acknowledgment that the Administration’s disastrous economic policies are going to put a lot of commercial drivers out of work.

Or maybe it's because of a string of fatal accidents involving foreign commercial drivers?

quote:

On Friday, the Austin Police Department and the attorney of Solomun Weldekeal Araya confirmed that the Eritrean national tested negative for drugs and alcohol after he crashed a semitruck on I-35 in the north part of the Texas capital, killing five people and injuring 11, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

At the time of the accident in mid-March, a bystander took a video of Araya struggling to comprehend English after the bystander scolded him that he killed people in the crash.

The story follows after the Biden administration in 2023 put into action an initiative to bolster the presence of "refugee communities" in trucking. From January 2021 to April 2022, the Transportation Department issued 876,000 commercial driver's licenses, effectively doubling the annual number of new drivers.

Noooooo... It can't be that. It can only be "xenophobia," and "racism," and white supremacy/white nationalism on the part of Orange Hitler.

The coach killed in this crash was on his way to meet my brother. Shocked that more people didn't die.

Not saying you won’t need it to transit local roads. But interstate truckers are by far not the only group who needs a CDL.

I’m generally against government regulation that makes it harder for companies to do their business. This plan “briefs well” but can have several unintended consequences. That’s all I’m saying.

I drive all over the west and mountain west.

The number of foreign truckers is mind blowing.

Many of them with their phones in their faces because they don’t have cameras because they don’t work for large trucking companies.

All large trucking companies have cameras to protect themselves and to keep their drivers off their phones.

Or it could be unnecessary stipulations placed on a job with too many stipulations as it is. This is the opposite of free market

It's good in theory. But in actuality, many truckers are Eastern European. There's already a low supply of truck drivers due to laws and regulations that make it difficult to make money driving (electronic logs, rest times, etc.). I would assume this will only cause a truck driver shortage, which will cause transportation issues and affect supply and costs.

So what? They can learn English too.

I was CFO at a company that owned 18 wheeler dealerships. Eastern Europeans would try to pay $35k in cash then refuse to provide info for the IRS reporting for cash transactions over $10k

You still failed to validate your claim. Please provide a specific example of kinds of "a lot of equipment requires a CDL, and not all traverse highways". What kinds of vehicles are you referencing that are driven off highways that require a CDL to operate? I know CDL requirements, which is why I'm asking for an example in your claim, particularly, the "agricultural industry" that you say will take a hit.

Point being, this only impacts vehicles, or trailers, that meet the CDL requirements operating on road. There are zero requirements by law to have a CDL to operate any machinery off-road. If you're talking about the large tractors that will sometimes clog up two lane rural roads running between farms, if you think any of those are operating with a CDL, you're sorely mistaken. Private companies may require it to operate their equipment, but a far cry from what you're trying to claim.

Have a buddy from HS that drives OTR, I know he’s told me several times about what a plague the foreign drivers are. Good to see this happening

This will be very interesting to see regarding the urgent need for OTR drivers

I have represented three trucking accidents where the drivers did not speak English and was always concerned about that issue being brought up
