“US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told her G20 colleagues Friday that Washington is dropping a push for a controversial provision in a global digital tax, opening the door to a likely agreement.”

The US shift -- part of a broader repositioning by President Joe Biden from the "America First" agenda of former President Donald Trump -- prompted immediate praise from Germany and France, which said a deal was now "within reach" following the US pivot.

Yellen announced at the G20 finance ministers meeting that US officials "will engage robustly" in the talks and "is no longer advocating for 'safe harbor' implementation of Pillar 1," a Treasury official told AFP.“

We literally have a president (a shell of one) that has done nothing but hurt Americans and America.

So I’ll take it we’ll be mostly charging China and India, right? Down with it if that’s the case.

“A global digital tax would target US internet giants such as Amazon, Facebook and Google, which have long been accused of exploiting loopholes to minimise their tax bills“

I’m all for those three getting railroaded - but all it will do is make things more expensive and inflation worse. The consumer will be paying that tax.

The justifications for DST are weak. Money grab by EU governments.

They are angry because these companies played IP/ hybrid entity/instrument games but that's what BEPS was for.

Yellen is a lunatic. She wants to tax unrealized capital gains too.

Unrealized gains is almost a contradiction in terms. Can we take unrealized loss deductions? If my stonk account goes up 50% in a crazy mid day swing then back down 60%, but I never sell, how does that work? Is it just some random, arbitrary snapshot or holding period?

This is truly one of the most ridiculous "ideas" I've ever heard. I haven't read anything about it and don't plan to because if we adopt something like this we're doomed.
