Not sure if serious.

Absolutely serious. I think everyone would agree that the number of people who have died in any manner attributable to COVID 19 is a very small number compared to the total population in the US...and the number of people arrested or fined for violating stay at home orders since March of this year total in the whopping thousands...not tens of thousands, but the thousands. Almost all of these were charged with violating the order while committing other crimes like trespassing, public drunkeness etc. One would presume that almost all of these people who have been charged were asked to go home initially and did not comply.....they should have been, by this board's standard, shot on sight....comply or die. Instead they were detained and at worst paid a fine....they did not have their children stripped from their care because they committed a misdemeanor like crossing the border illegally.

I will bet a coca-cola that there will be damages paid to business owners who have suffered damages due to lockdowns. It is ridiculous. While I don't doubt they have saved some lives they have done so at a price we can not begin to calculate and will not be able to for many years to come. We made a miserable mistake, one that Washington encouraged by making people financially whole for a short period of time with federal money. Had that not happened Governors and Mayors would have NEVER had the temerity to tell business owners they were shut down...but with those business owners having "access" such as it was, to dollars, the pain was manageable. It was and is a mistake and one we are going to be paying dearly for for years. Saying it is the worse abuse of civil rights since the ending of slavery is fricking insanity. For one thing its only been 6 going on 7 months. As aggregious as it has been that is a moment in time compared to the systemic, state mandated violations of civil rights that occurred in this country until the 1950's or so. The lockdowns ARE a violation of our civil rights, I do not dispute that in the least....but saying it approaches the abuse that slavery represented is simply fricking insanity.

Like the number of people enslaved was relatively small. Good point.

The number of slaves was relatively small....but the numbers of people impacted negatively by the institution of slavery is not small and we are still counted in that number. The ills of slavery are far from eradicated from the fabric of the US....Barrs comments bear this out....slavery has impacted the United States for what, 200 years through 2020? 250? I know some claimed it went on for 400 years before 1861 but that is as silly as claiming an inability to enter a restaurant and eat is more devastating than being told you can't register to vote because you are not white and not a man. Talk about some white priviledge...whining about not being able to go to a theater for 7 months and stating unequivocally it is worse than Jim Crow.

I will say this. Barr is no doubt spot on in his assessment when applied to white men. This is the MOST horrible violation of the civil rights of white men since slavery....possible even before that. There is NO debate there.

Is there a video youtube or otherwise available
of his talk at Hillsdale? All I can find are
snippets by MSM...no context.

Your TDS has made you so blind to what the lockdowns/stay at homes have done to smaller businesses. That the local governments have forced small businesses to shutter their operations while allowing large multi national corporations to sell and provide the same goods and services is such a monumental denial of constitutional rights The sad part is that people like you gaslight for the officials that most likely destroyed their business or will take years to overcome the damage, all in the name of their rage and hatred of orange man bad.

You are spot on my friend. The damage we have done to small businesses is horrible and we will be paying for it for a LONG time. I sincerely think that in the not too distant future there will be damages awarded to business owners who were damaged for no reason....and their numbers are not small except when compared to the population. There is no debate that we have violated those people's civil rights and even us as customers. That is not the issue...the issue is saying this has been worse than Jim Crow and similar laws which have impacted almost everyone in this nation negatively other than straight white men. That is simply a white man melt. Being told by the state you can't go to a football game or a theater is a violation of your civil rights. It is not akin to being told you can't vote because of your race or you can't adopt children because you are gay or even get married because you are gay or your potential spouse is a different race. And it has been 7 months while these other things have lasted hundreds of years. It is, in my opinion, denigrating what is a violation of all of our civil rights by making the debate over which was worse when it doesn't matter....our rights are being violated NOW...even if it is arguably a minor incovenience for most of us (not so for small business owners). Shifting the focus of a divided nation to one of levels of violation instead of focusing on the current violation is a disservice to us as citizens. Barr has made a logistical error for those of us who do indeed think the lockdowns are a violation of our civil rights because voicing that opinion now will be seen as saying it is almost as bad as slavery. I know y'all love drama and disputes and trolling and liberal tears....I get that. I even understand it....many of you have been told for years that you don't matter and the last Democratic nominee called you a deplorable. I get it. But what Barr has done has further harmed the small business owners whose civil rights have been far worsely violated than the average citizens because it will be more difficult in some areas to find a jury who will be open to the idea of awarding damages because they will be convinced the small business owner thinks they have been as badly treated as slaves.

When somebody says "I will continue to fight for what I believe is right", it usually means they know they aren't right.

Slaves were ~13% of the census in 1860. I wouldn't call that "relatively small". That's a shitload of slaves.
