Can someone explain to me like I’m 5 why there is a need for an auto pen? Can the president not just sign whatever with a normal pen? Full disclosure, I never knew there was an auto pen until all this stuff came out.

There's probably a good bit of "fan mail" this would be useful for.

I **believe** the first president to use it for "official" business was Obama... and probably for the very purpose to set a precedent. Never forget it was his wetdream to have a shadow puppet third term.

Bush actually asked the DOJ for approval to use it for legislation and received it from them, but never used it.

I have eight books signed by Lyndon Johnson and addressed to my dad. Out of those books, only one has an actual signature, the rest are all autopen. LBJ was notorious for using it. I just don't think he used it for official documents that required his signature.

Autopens have been used since JFK. Before that presidents often had their subordinates sign documents. A lot of autograph authenticators can identify each president’s secretaries’ signature. Who knows if executive orders are new. But, signatures for ordinary administrative tasks have been delegated since Washington.

It should not be used for anything official. They could use it for the Christmas cards or whatever.

But anything official should be by the Presidents hand and on video with witnesses.

The crazy thing is, it really creates a completely unnecessary EXTRA step if you are doing it for actual “official business.”

It actually saves significant time. Next time Trump signs significant legislation check out the bucket of pens sitting in front of him. The president signs dozens of copies for everything, and he uses a different pen for each one. After the ceremony every pen is distributed as a keepsakes for key people.

Now think about how much time would be spent for signatures for insignificant activities.

Every military member gets a retirement letter from the President.

They are signed via auto pen

My wife got one from the first lady

Assuming the same auto pen was used.

A quick internet search will tell you this isn’t true. Auto pen has been around for a long time.

This is everywhere in government now.

I was having some issues with my CAC not long ago and it kept screwing up signing for some paperwork.

I got frustrated and just said, let me just come to the office and sign with a pen. I was told no, it had to be auto-pen with certs.

Except for logs, there is no signing with a pen anymore on official docs.
